jto555 Posted November 20, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted November 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I just bought a second-hand Leica 21mm f2.8 ASPH and I found that it is back-focusing on my M(240). Not an issue as it is under six months warranty so it will be going back. Â However, while checking out the lens I noticed a small focus-shift to the background. Is this normal or part of the back-focus issue with this particular lens? Â I may end up getting the new 21m f3.4 ASPH instead, I am guessing that has no focus issues? lct Posted November 20, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted November 20, 2013 Back focus and focus shift are different things as you know. The 21/2.8 asph has no focus shift that i'm aware of but your lens may need some calibration.
jto555 Posted November 21, 2013 Author Share #4 Â Posted November 21, 2013 You are not going to believe this... Â I rang Leica, Solms about the lens just to get an idea of how much it might cost to repair. And I was told that the lens is still under guarantee and so the shipping to, repair and shipping back to me is free. Â WOW, how is that for service??? I have to send my camera back with the lens and they will adjust the lens to the camera. Â I am stunned!!!
jrh68uk Posted November 21, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted November 21, 2013 Exactly the same for me, a couple of years ago when I bought one of these used. It rear-focused slightly wide open and showed some focus shift to the rear when stopping down. Â After a while I decided to pay to send mine in because I wanted it to have an all-round check and for some dust just behind the rear elect to be removed. I said I wasn't going to send my M9 in as well, and Solms said fine, they'd calibrate to their internal M9 standard. Â It came back with perfect focus (don't notice the focus shift now in real-world images because it's within d.o.f.) but the dust was still there. Sent it back and they completed the work without extra charge. Â This is a lovely lens. Hope you enjoy yours when you get it back.

jto555 Posted November 22, 2013 Author Share #7  Posted November 22, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) No focus shift on my lens. I really rate this lens a bargain secondhand at the moment   Well my lens has gone off on its holidays to Germany. Now I am looking forward to it coming back!  I have had a look at some of my test shots and other than the focus point being behind where I focused the images have a really nice feel to them. And I have been playing around with Adobe Camera Raw lens correction as well and the Canon 14mm Mark ii looks like it corrects most of the bulge in the centre of the images as well. I am very happy with that.  Roll on the knock on the door from the UPS man/woman...
jto555 Posted December 5, 2013 Author Share #8 Â Posted December 5, 2013 Just got the lens back from Solms. Just 3 days in repair and fixed under warranty! You might pay extra for Leica but the aftersales service is second to none. Â Lens works great now. Sharp, edges are good and no focus shift. Â Â One happy camper here.
