Everyone seems to be jumping on the 50mm / tele lens band waggon. Im going to say a 35mm! Ive shot my dog with a 35mm and got some great results. I find it harder to shoot him with my 50mm (due to wanting to shoot with a narrow DOF and getting him to sit still)

I wrote a little post about it on my blog..

I am going to put a cat amongst the dogs!:D:D Lets see what happens - it should be havoc…

The point is that with proper technique you can use a longer lens indoors freehand.

Elmarit-M 90 @ 2.8 (Exif say 16:confused:) 2000 ISO, 1/12th Not a lucky shot. I took about ten and only one had a bit of motion blur. I admit to two glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon.

I think this lens is not good for cats, see what it made with my Mothers' Appartment Tiger..

Happy new Year ;)

but it's not the best focal length for tight head shots.

Thanks for this post and the subsequent replies it elicited :)

So a doggy portrait.

I would go for 75mm, else try 50mm or 90mm

An SLR makes it easier for a close up with an ultra wide angle to give a funny (if a little over used) dog picture. Closer focussing and lack of parallax makes an SLR easier for this overall. I know, it's not answering the question asked :D
