Sunday night question, as I think about photos I'd like to take with the M9 about which I'm so excited.

What lens would you use for photographs of dogs? So far, the few I've tried with the 35mm I have started with are OK, but it's not the best focal length for tight head shots. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Depends on so many factors, size of the dog, typical distance you're shooting from, shooting inside or outside.

50mm works well inside, but the 70mm might be better outside. 90mm if you really want to compress the background.

My advice is to find a great dealer who'll take a return and let you swap to a 90mm. I personally don't bother with the Leica when it comes to dogs, too much work, use a DSLR and set to servo focus with a good zoom lens!

Any lens will work. In fact a 21 will give you some interesting perspectives.

As always with photographing dogs, you will need a good dog handler, some treats, toys for distractions and lots of patience. This was with a 50.

Well, are you after ´portraits´ of them, or do you want to shoot action? I am very interested in dogs, but very seldom do portraits of ´handled´ dogs; I much prefer the situations where a couple (or a whole pack) of dogs run around and interact. I never try to ´direct´ them; I accept lots of misses, and get happy with the lucky ones.

That said, my preferred lenses for this is either the 50 lux or the 75 cron. Shorter than 50 means too much cropping, and longer than 75 means focussing problems. Both the lenses are good enough to allow substantial cropping if needed, so I get far better results with cropped 75 than with 90; 135 doesn´t work at all for me unless the pooches are asleep…;)

Were I to do head shots of dogs, I would certainly tackle the task with one of those two lenses, too.

Some of my dog pics can be found on my Smugmug site (now a bit disarrayed, but still navigable…:o ). "Vovvar" is Swedish for dogs...

Of course, the Hektor! I'm sure he'd approve :)

Chazphoto, welcome to the forum. I am sure your question is serious and deserves a serious answer.

I am currently working on a super picture of my dog who is asleep on the hearthside rug with a log-burning fire in the background. In my case, atmosphere and environment are important. (Camera; Leica X1 with 35mm equivalent lens). But for head portraits I would strongly prefer a lens in the range 75mm to 135mm depending on available or desired shooting distance.
