OK SO i'm new to Leica and also Leica glass.

I've tried a few CV lenses, but always felt that they lacked something that the only other lens i had 28mm Elmarit, seemed to deliver.

I've just taken a few frames with this 50mm lens on my M8 and its filled me with a lovely warm feeling. :)

now the lens came with a UVa 13206 filter fitted which is in perfect condition.

Question: Do i find an IR filter e43 for this lens or is the feeling that i can resolve colour shifts in LR?

again i'm new to Leica, so if the best solution is to replace the UVa or indeed, keep the IVa and resolve colours in PP.

your help and advice would be gratefully received.

From my understanding you would need an IR filter for your M8. For all other digital M's the UVa is what you want for protection or cutting through Manchester haze. For me with filters I always try to do whatever is possible on camera before having to muck around with PP for such a simple filter fix.

Leica UV/IR cut filter, E39 size, can be bought new from a dealer for about $120 (roughly 75 pounds) in US, as here. So I'm sure you can find them less expensive used, either from dealer or private. Dealers also may have odd lots on special deals if you get lucky on size (and color).

The Summilux 50 has a 43mm filter thread with an uncommon pitch (0.5mm), which makes it difficult and expensive to get filters for this lens. Leica offers an UV/IR filter of that size, order no. 13417. It is about 125 Euros in Germany (new, only available in chrome/silver), so 50 pounds sounds like an okay deal, if it is indeed the original Leica filter. You only need one, no need to buy both of them

As an alternative, B+W offers filters in 43mm (UV/IR among others) that seem to work for a lot of people (including me) on the E43 Summilux in spite of seemingly having the (nominally) wrong thread pitch. They screw in just fine, without any binding. The problems only start when you want to use the original Leica clamp on hood.

UV/IR filters are mandatory on any M8 or M8.2 camera.

If your lens is a black Summilux 50/1.4 # 11114 and you want to use the nice 12586 hood on it you will have to use a silver Leica UV/IR filter # 13417 i'm afraid as there is no black E43 Leica UV/IR filter available and the 12586 hood is blocked by B+W filters.

Or you may wish to do what i did with mine: keep the ring of your UVa # 13206 and put the glass of the UV/IR # 13417 into it. No problem at all.

You might wish to try an inexpensive Rocolax UV/IR filter instead but i've never tried one on my 50/1.4 # 11114 so far. Beware that Rocolax filters (at least my 40.5mm) have no internal filter thread though.

Thanks for the advice much appreciated. I would like to use the hood at some point.

Also replacing the uva glass could be an option.

Q: when using the hood can the silver ir filter be seen?

Ok so im going to keep the UVa filter as I shoot film with non leica currently so will keep this for future M film and digital cameras.

Ive just planned a trip to Munich in December. Can anyone recommend a good store for Leica equipment.... there seems to be alot of the lens hoods available in Germany.

Thanks again for the advice

I've just had my copy of this lens rather expensively CLA'd but am very pleased with the result - clean lens, silky focussing.

I'm not a big fan of the lens hood whose claws wreak havoc with the anodising. I much prefer using a 43mm to 46mm step up ring with a screw in lens hood which allows the use of 46mm filters as well of course.

My copy was cla'd recently and seems great. Good idea about step up ring :-)
