I'm indecision whether to get the summarit or the summicron as my first leica lens to pair with the M8.

a second hand summicron's price equates to a brand new summarit.

I do know the differences between the two.

And I can't try them out from where I live.

Is the 1/2 step a real difference in reality?

The half stop isn't a real issue, no. If you need more low light capability you'd be far better off with a Summilux. Difference between. The Summicron has a lot more light falloff towards the edges than the Summarit so you basically got more light at the edges with the Summarit (or the same amount) when both are wide open. Only at the image center the Summicron is at an advantage. Given this and that both lenses perform on the same level optically I'd buy the Summarit in a heartbeat.

But: The Summicron draws fantastically in low light. It is my favorite of the there for low light- high contrast photography.

IThe Summarit is somewhat more clinical, a “modern” look but cannot be faulted , the Summilux FLE a bit large and expensive for all its well-known qualities.

I think the Summicron asph is still first choice.

Isn’t it wonderful to be able to decide between three great lenses and to be unable to make a wrong choice? :)

My two pence worth. If you need to use the lens in low light then go for a Summilux;). If you don't and you simply want a good lens (given that Leica simply don't make any 'bad' lenses, then the Summarit would be the choice I would strongly recommend - and I've owned both the Summicron Aspheric and the Summarit. The Summarit is a fabulous little lens.

I've owned all the recent ASPH Leica lenses in this focal length, some more than once:o (I currently have the FLE Summilux and the Summarit) and it is true that they are all good. Certainly plenty good enough for me, and I suspect most other photographers. If I had to wipe the slate clean and buy either the Summicron or Summarit, I'd go for the Summicron. There's not a great deal in it but with a closer minimum focus (that 10cm can make quite a bit of difference), fully usable F2, and IMO a silkier build quality, the Summicron would be my choice.

I went through this recently and chose the ASPH. Very happy with my choice. IQ is superb, minimum focus distance and f2 are better and I much prefer the handling and hood on the ASPH. The one on the summarit has a tendency to unwind on its own in the camera bag.... but the summarit is very good for the money.
