WATE step-up filter ring and reflection problem

I recently added a WATE. I am encountering a problem using filters with the accessory 67mm step-up ring. The step-up ring has two openings in the beveled edge. Light passes through these openings and then reflects back into the lens whether using the Lee system or circular screw on filters (less so with circular, but it still occurs). Is there a solution other than black tape? See quick iPhone pictures below demonstrating the phenomenon. Regards.

Your step up adapter should come with a thin black plastic sheet in the form of a ring that fits inside the adapter, shielding the light through the 2 windows.

 

I still have reflections after fitting the black plastic on, so black tape was added to completely cover the 2 windows. Looks hideous but no more light leaks.

I just checked my box and the adapter ring I purchased did not come with any such plastic insert. I will contact Leica. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, the black plastic ring is supposed to be used only with M8, not M9 nor M, as it will then cause vignetting.

The removable black ring for M8 is actually for the #14484 for the 18/3.8.

 

The correct filter ring for the WATE is the #14473 which has no black plastic ring inside it at least on the brand one one I just opened.

I confirm that my 14473 E67 filter holder for the WATE was delivered with the black plastic ring (bought in Germany about a year ago).

 

Maybe the box content has changed since then and the plastic ring is not included anymore.

So was mine. However this plastic ring is of no use whatsoever, as the diameter is too wide to fit in the filter holder.

 

For what it's worth, it has an inscription on one side around the circumference saying, 'Only for use with LEICA M8 + UV/IR filter — This side towards lens'. Doesn't make any sense to me ... Okay, it does make sense to reduce the diameter of the clearance for the M8 ... but why with UV/IR filter only ... and why would the orientation of the ring matter? And why is the ring's diameter too wide to fit the filter holder in the first place? :confused:

 

Anyway—if the ring isn't included anymore then maybe that's because they figure that anyone who is buying the filter holder today isn't going to use it on a Leica M8.

That ring comes with the 18/3.8 lens filter holder #14484. I just opened m,one (never used) and that black plastic insert is in it. The filter holder is 77mm versus the 67mm for the WATE,

Impossible. My plastic ring is too wide for the WATE's filter holder by less than 1 mm—so it's way too small for the 18/3.8's filter holder.

Sorry, sorry. You are correct and I stand corrected. However, the plastic ring should be slightly wider so as to friction fit into the filter holder as the Manual for the 18 filter holder explains.

 

"To insert the ring, press it into the filter holder from below (from the threaded side) until it snaps into place."

That helped indeed. With a little force, my plastic ring does fit the WATE's filter holder now. Thank you very much for the hint!

younes is right, the plastic ring is indeed intended for the M8/8.2.

 

For the M (or M9 I suspect) the plastic ring does cause vignetting at 16mm, I have forgotten that I actually trimmed the inner circle with a pair of scissors to prevent this.

 

Eventually I still went ahead and use duct tape to cover the 2 windows and completely solved the problem of light leak.
