I have a group of photographer friends who have had me on an email thread discussing the new Sony A7 and A7R with Zeiss lenses. They're all raving about how the 35/28 Zeiss/Sony just blows the Leica 50mm Summilux asph away on the MTF charts and how the Sony's resolving power is so much better than anything else on the street. I found myself on the verge of ordering the A7R and 35/28 Zeiss/Sony from B&H this morning, but decided to first take a walk with my MM and 50/1.4 asph to do some critical tests for myself.

 

Result: I don't care what the MTF charts show. What I see with my own eyes is a lens that is tack sharp corner to corner, great contrast and no aberration visible to my eyes. I'm sticking with my Leica system.

My opinion.

MTF charts can be taken serious. But the progress in the pictures is slow over the years. The IQ as you see it.

I have some very old lenses (1950), they are not so very good. Some old lenses and they are perhaps as good as the new one.

Some weeks ago I have bought a Minolta 1.2/50mm, this one works surprisingly well.

I have a crop camera, that helps, I think. :)

Agree that the a7r is a color camera to complement your MM. If the Leica WA lenses I want to use work on the a7r then I am in. I most always use 2 bodies, except for the Monochrom where I use the RX1, so I could get two a7r bodies and still have funds left over for a 28/2.8 versus one M240.

 

I must say though that after covering many RX-1 images to B&W ,most in my camera club cannot tell the difference from my MM images.

Just curious, are the people in your camera club seeing prints or viewing on a monitor? I've just finished a large batch of 20x30 prints from the MM and they are better by far than anything I've produced from other cameras.

Prints generally 13x19 for these purposes. I have also sent out some jpegs via the internet, but not for comparison purposes.
