Save yourself some money and buy the 28 Elmarit ASPH. I love it. I had the 28 Summicron but I truly like the Elmarit more, esp small size and outer fitting that won't come loose as sometimes with the 28 Summicron.

Opposite for me - had the 28 Elmarit and sold it for the Summicron with no regrets - the Sumicron is extraordinary. There are numerous threads here debating the relative merits of each of these lenses (ie http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-type-240/296144-tim-ashley-m240-28-cron.html) but I'm sure you will be happy with the 28 Summicron .

Both current 28mm ASPH Leica M lenses are very good. I use the 28mm Summicron for photojournalist style photos and low-light handheld shooting and the 28mm Elmarit ASPH shines as a landscape and general carry around lens.

I think that it's the lens hood that holds people back. The newer lenses (eg. 35/1.4 FLE) have quality hoods. Photos using the lens are fantastic. I would happily buy one if Leica left everything unaltered apart from the hood. Will stick to my 50s & 35 for now though.

The hood may be ugly but it is what hoods are there for: effective.

Hi Martin,

No-one ever looked at an extraordinary photograph and said:

"I don't like it because I don't like the look of the lens hood that was fitted!"

or for that matter looked at an extraordinary photograph and asked

"what camera and lens did you use?

the issue is the photograph itself...!

Regards,

Mark :)

Meryem Ana Evi... it has been many years since I've visited, perhaps again someday.

Congratulations on your new lens! I expect you will enjoy it, it is exquisite.

The 12589 hood for the 35 Summilux ASPH fits the 28 Summicron and is smaller than the stock 28 hood. I started using this hood with the Summicron mounted on an M8, having no problem with vignetting of course. I have used it only once so far on full-frame, only through an airplane window, and I don't see any vignetting. Could be a pleasant change for you!

Here below the 28mm Summicron ASPH with 12589 hood on Leica M240... Landing approach to Kahului, Maui, Hawaii

I have the 28 Summicron ASPH and have found it to be truly outstanding. If a person were to have only one wide angle lens, I would recommend the 28 'cron (yes, I can hear the 35 'cron disciples raging in the background :D ). For an all-around wide lens, the 28 'cron ASPH can't be beat IMO.

The 28 'cron and the 50 Summilux cover about 90% of my usage. If you have a 21, a 28,

a 50 and a 90, you have all the bases covered for M photography IMHO.

Regarding the 21 Summilux vs. the 21 Super Elmar choice, the Super Elmar is said to be the best 21 Leica has ever made in terms of image quality (sharpness, contrast, color fidelity, etc.).

Sure, the 21/1.4 will do things that the 21/3.4 can't - but at a price ($4650USD higher price than the 21/3.4, over 100% increase in weight, roughly 2x the size/bulk).

At the end of the day, only you can decide if the cost/weight/bulk penalties that come with the 21 Summilux are worth the benefits of being able to shoot at f/1.4; for me the answer is no. YMMV.

I agree it's a wonderful lens on my M9.

If I could only have one wide angle lens my vote would go to the WATE though!

I agree that this is a good kit. And the 21SEM, the 28Cron, a 50Cron and the 90 Macro-Elmar make a smallish and light-weight kit.
