Green Lakes State Park contains very unique lakes which are very deep and extend into the bedrock. About half the water that enters the lakes comes from seepage through the bedrock and contains large amounts of dissolved minerals chiefly calcium, magnesium and sulfur. Each years there are "whiting" events where these materials precipitate. Over thousands of years, calcium reefs have formed from inorganic processes.

At Deadman's Point; the reef , is pretty visible and contains many rare aquatic mosses and freshwater sponges.

Thanks for the look.

Karl,

Lovely autumn colors from the leaves. This brings back fond memories of the 1950's when my parents and I lived in Salamanca NY. The south side of the city was very near the entrance of the Alleghany State Park that was emblazoned with colors at this time of year.

Thank you, Guenther, Dee, Paul, Stuart and Bill.

Paul, I have some of those same memories for myself. I grew up in the Southern Tier and my uncle used to take us camping to the ANF and south into Western PA as a child.
