About half the water that enters the lakes comes from seepage through the bedrock and contains large amounts of dissolved minerals chiefly calcium, magnesium and sulfur. Each years there are "whiting" events where these materials precipitate. Over thousands of years, calcium reefs have formed from inorganic processes.  Welcome, dear visitor! This brings back fond memories of the 1950's when my parents and I lived in Salamanca NY. The south side of the city was very near the entrance of the Alleghany State Park that was emblazoned with colors at this time of year.
