StS Posted October 28, 2013 Share #22 Â Posted October 28, 2013 My suspicion is, that one needs to mount these lenses on an optical bench, or at least a tripod to see a difference in technical performance. Â If the addtional stop is not an issue, my suggestion would be to pick whatever produces the most pleasant looking pictures. Â Stefan

algrove Posted October 29, 2013 Share #24 Â Posted October 29, 2013 Funny, but to me, while the separation of the hand (itself beautiful) from the background is very nice, the transition to OOF in the chess pieces is jarring. Â That could come from idea that OOF area is roughly one-third in front and two-thirds behind plane of focus. Â Plus it is often difficult to have an image work when the foreground is and foreground objects are OOF.

01af Posted October 29, 2013 Share #26 Â Posted October 29, 2013 That could come from the idea that out-of-focus area is roughly one-third in front and two-thirds behind plane of focus. Which in general is a wrong idea. Â Â Still continue to work on the image ... This picture is great the way it is.
thighslapper Posted October 29, 2013 Share #27 Â Posted October 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Which in general is a wrong idea. Â What's the 'right' idea ? Â ...... not criticising ...... just interested to know..... Â I have just readjusted my M's rangefinder as it was out for close distances and faced this particular dilemma .... the Nocti 0.95 front focuses a fair bit wide open in comparison to 1.4. Â As a result to get both in focus it is 2/3-1/3 at 0.95 and 1/3-2/3 at 1.4 ....... and it's interesting the watch what happens using focus peaking on the M .... the 'near point' of the 'focus range' (I am not clear that the 'peaking' depth equates to DOF) hardly moves, but the 'rear point' marches backwards as the aperture reduces, presumably due to focus shift. Â I assume that's where this 'rule' originally comes from ..... or am I wrong ?
Guest malland Posted October 29, 2013 Share #28  Posted October 29, 2013 There is no "best"...Of course there is — it's the Summilux-50 pre-ASPH. When the Summilux-50 ASPH was announced a friend and I ran out to buy the last two new Summilux-50 pre-ASPH lenses in Bangkok, for a US$1,350 special price at that time. I've always liked this lens better than both the APSH and the Noctilux 1.0..   M-Monochrom | Summilux-50 pre-ASPH | ISO 1,250 | f/1.4 | 1/180 sec Paris – Khmer statue from Musée Guimet exhibition "Angkor: Naissance d'un mythe - Louis Delaporte et le Cambodge"    —Mitch/Paris Looking for Baudelaire [WIP]

davidbaddley Posted October 31, 2013 Share #34 Â Posted October 31, 2013 Sounds like the answer might be the APO Summilux-M 50 ASPH. Any rumor of such a lens in design? Could such a lens be made? Â - David
Gerard Posted October 31, 2013 Share #35 Â Posted October 31, 2013 I'll tell you what my dilemma is... no damn funds to buy any 50. Â I dream of having to worry about whether to by the APO Cron or the Lux. (It's a very pleasant dream every time).
Arka Posted November 1, 2013 Share #36 Â Posted November 1, 2013 Seems like a personal decision; I used a 50 Cron this weekend as a walkaround, and found myself missing f/1.4. That's more important to me than the technical perfection (though the 50APO is very impressive in that regard).
Guest borge Posted November 1, 2013 Share #37 Â Posted November 1, 2013 Seems like a personal decision; I used a 50 Cron this weekend as a walkaround, and found myself missing f/1.4. That's more important to me than the technical perfection (though the 50APO is very impressive in that regard). Â Exactly! The decision between these lenses shouldn't be made on technical merits but rather what the user needs or wants. at 1.4 the Summilux gives a look that the APO can't give. But if you never shoot wide open anyway you are better off with the APO. Â That's exactly why I never could replace my Nocti with neither the APO or the Summilux. But I can stop the Nocti down and get similar results as the Summilux and APO gives stopped down.
leica lux Posted November 1, 2013 Share #38 Â Posted November 1, 2013 I'm about to get the pre-ASPH v3 summilux now.. Â Mint condition 2700$ + warranty, sounds like a fair deal. What do you guys say?
Guest malland Posted November 1, 2013 Share #39  Posted November 1, 2013 I'm about to get the pre-ASPH v3 summilux now.. Mint condition 2700$ + warranty, sounds like a fair deal. What do you guys say? Sounds great. As I posted earlier, it's a lens that I prefer to the newer Summilux-50 ASPH and to the Noctilux 0.95, which I sold. Here is another picture taken with it, and I'll throw in the color picture as well because I found an evaluation on the web that states that this lens is prone to CA, which I haven't found to be the case. The color picture was shot with the M9, using the "Shoot at ISO 640 and push in LR5" technique: it was pushed 3 stops, for an effective ISO of 5,120.  M-Monochrom | Summilux-50 pre-ASPH | ISO 1,250 | f/1.4 1/350 sec Paris – Khmer statue (King Javaraman VII. - 13th century) from Musée Guimet exhibition "Angkor: Naissance d'un mythe - Louis Delaporte et le Cambodge"     M9-P | Summilux-50 pre-ASPH | ISO 640 pushed 3 stops [Effective ISO 5,120] | f/2.0 | 1/180 sec Bangkok    —Mitch/Paris Looking for Baudelaire [WIP]

What do you guys say?  Do you have a handle on the Leica part number of the lens you are getting? WIKI lists 2 black models- and black paint version and a black chrome version I guess. I have asked Mitch if his ft scale and lens "50" was in red which I have seen on more than one, but he says his is in yellow.  P.S. Glad to see Leica Lux is not getting a Cron.
