jaques Posted October 26, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted October 26, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) My Noct back focused by about an inch over 2 meters on my M cameras- so I sent it in for service at Solms. I just got back a release form asking me to sign off on the repair. This is what Leica says: Â "Importand notice !!! It could be that during repair the optical alignment will be changed. Due to the construction of this lens, the index point, which is affixed to the main housing, needs to be removed, and be replaced with a glued sleeve, which has a new index point. The base of the sleeve will be visible after the repair. At the same time the pins for the sunshade will be twisted around. But this has no further influence of the performance of the lens because of the round lens hood. Only the pins will not exactly sit above the index point anymore but will be either in front or behind the index point. After this change, it will not be possible to change this lens back into his original state. Please confirm with your signature your approval of this repair and change." Â I am going to go ahead with the repair- but I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar repair on their lens- and if they can explain to me the changes I will see in the lens. Especially the bit about the base of the sleeve being visible after the repair? I am hoping this won't be too obvious or look too bad? The bit about the hood pins losing alignment is annoying, but I guess nothing can be done, and it is more important to me that the lens focus correctly than look good! Â Also I was wondering if anyone thinks it is a good idea to have the lens coded at the same time? Would coding add to or detract from the value of the lens? I figure I should probably do it whilst the lens is in the Gnomes of Solms hands.
Advertisement Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Hi jaques, Take a look here Noctilux f1 Service question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Herr Barnack Posted October 26, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted October 26, 2013 I would get a second opinion from Sherry Krauter before signing off on this repair. Â Her website is Sherry Krauter.com -- Home of the Golden Touch.
algrove Posted October 26, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted October 26, 2013 Had my f1 CLA'd, recalibrated and 6 bit coded about 1-2 years ago by Leica NJ and never had this question asked. Mine is the V2 with the slide out, very thin lens hood.
John McMaster Posted October 26, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted October 26, 2013 That is the v4, same with me and my v4 a couple of years ago at Solms (6-bit and CLA) nothing like that was brought up. I asked for optimised wide open and for 10m or less... Â john
jaques Posted October 26, 2013 Author Share #5 Â Posted October 26, 2013 thanks for the replies! Â My Noctilux is a V1- so perhaps it is different? It is a little worrying... but I think I will just say go ahead... it is a bit too late to get a second opinion from Sherry as I am in Australia and the lens in on the other side of the world in Solms. I guess I will have to trust them... Also Leica is doing the work gratis in lieu of some money they owed me... Â Other than the slight back focus I wasn't aware there was any other issue with the lens- unfortunately the report doesn't detail the nature of the problem/s- only the possible outcomes of the repair... erl Posted October 26, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted October 26, 2013 Jaques, I would suggest it is OK to go ahead. Since you are in Oz, give Camera Clinic a call and speak to Wayne. He is fully qualified and authorized by Leaica to do most repairs. He actually fixed my V1 noct that Solms failed twice to correct. His opinion would be worth a phone call. You will have to look CC' s number up as I am currently in Venice and don' t have easy access to my usual data base or I could give it to you. jaques Posted December 10, 2013 Author Share #7 Â Posted December 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) some may have noticed my disappointment with my troubles with my new M. I thought I should dig up this thread from an update about my much happier experience getting my V1 Noctilux serviced. I just got it back with my M the other days. Leica in Solms did a wonderful job. The lens was glass was spotlessly clean- the modification to the mount aesthetically invisible- the lens was coded very neatly- and best of all, now for the first time- it focus's perfectly wide open! Spot on with the M RF. Also the hood pins still seem to be in perfect vertical alignment despite leica's warning that they not be true after modification. To top it off Leica infilled some of the lens markings where the white paint had fallen out. And the cherry on the cake: they sent me a genuine Leica back cap- along with my own CV non-oem one! Although they are just blobs of formed plastic- the Leica cap is superior. Â Leica did all of this for free- to make up for an expensive (for me) misunderstanding and mistake in servicing my M8 a few years ago. They have done a wonderful job and I am over the moon so to speak.
erl Posted December 10, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted December 10, 2013 Very pleased for you jaques! There is nothing quite so exciting as a Noctilux that works properly. You will really enjoy that lens. Â The lure of working at f1 is very powerful, but remember that lens is no slouch when stopped down as well.
