Bearly Sane

The story here is better than the pictures. These are pretty cropped, but taken from safety in side my car with my M3 and Summicron 50/2.

How did the cubs get in the tree, you ask? We're driving along in Banff National Park, and come across a couple of dozen people photographing a mother and her cubs eating berries not 10 feet from the road.

Of course, we've all seen the warnings about feeding bears. No one would be that stupid. Taking pictures from 10 feet away was never mentioned in the warning, however, and so the crowd gathered on the shoulder, camera shutter emulators clicking, flashes flashing.

THEN, one brave (foolish) fellow steps forward from the crowd to get that much closer -- 10 feet is not close enough. Mother bear charges! Cubs shoot up the trees!

THanks for your positive feed back and encouragement, fellas!

Yes, I was really surprised how close people got. Those bears were just lazily minding their own business, picking those berries, and moving along the ditch, with the gallery of picture taking spectators moving along side. Sort of reminded me of a golf match.

Slow and nonchalant as those bears were, I'm sure it seemed perfectly safe -- until all of a sudden it wasn't safe! And that's when they gecha!

I saw the bear charge, and luckily it was only a bluff. It ran only 3 or 4 steps toward the guy, and stopped short. Everyone was just stunned where they stood.

Here's another one, from my passenger side window, uncropped, with the 50mm lens: pretty darn close!

Stu',

Thanks for that tip! When I get home I'll either replace, or repost the photos with maximum size/quality versions.

I sure appreciate the encouragement on this forum, especially given how staggeringly good the photos I see around here all the time.

I'm just delighted I returned to film, and found this terrific forum!
