luigi bertolotti Posted October 23, 2013 Share #21  Posted October 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just because you had a loose front part!? I keep hearing from loose front parts, whacky 6-bit codes, or screwed-up aperture blades with all kinds of Leica lenses. In particular the Summicron-M 28 mm Asph is notorious for the former issue. Just one or two anecdotal reports are no reason to challenge the Summarits' build quality in general.  Well. fact is that as an owner (collector... ) of a HUGE number of Leitz/Leica lenses (58, all for RF cameras) the Summarit is my ONLY lens which had a problem 2 years after its buying as a brand new item... I have lenses that have looseness in some parts (example... the aperture ring of a 50 Summarit of 62 years ago...the focus helicoid of a Thambar 77 years old...) and, whilst acknowledging that is not a reason to blame new Summarits build quality in general, it was also natural, for me, to notice this fact... and to relate it to the official statement from Leica co., at the times of new Summarits intro, that their relatively low cost was also the result of "new manufacturing methods" (the other factor was an effort to standardization... 75 and 90 are virtually identical). Btw, I repeat that its optical performance is stunning, and the issue I suffered was easily fixed at the cost of 50 Euros at a good repair shop... Advertisement Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Hi luigi bertolotti, Take a look here 90mm Elmarit-M or Tele Elmarit or Summicron. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
01af Posted October 23, 2013 Share #22 Â Posted October 23, 2013 ... the Summarit is my ONLY lens which had a problem two years after its buying as a brand-new item ... Yeah ... I see what you mean. But then, I bought my Summarits (all four of them) used from private sellers off eBay, and three years later my 90 mm's front part still has not come loose. Â Â ... so I found a Tele-Elmarit-M 90 mm for EUR 565 and hope the condition will be ok ... I think you got a very good deal. Show pictures!
Daniel Halmer Posted October 26, 2013 Author Share #23  Posted October 26, 2013 So, here are some pictures I took yesterday with my newly acquired Tele Elmarit. It came with the huge metal hood. Still, I does flare quite a lot, see attached. Would the experts among us consider this still normal or would you rather return the lense. Against strong backlight I do see some haze in the lense but it's not the famous TE desease I think, the glass doesn't look scratched but simply a bit "foggy".  Many thanks for your consideration. Carduelis Posted October 26, 2013 Share #24 Â Posted October 26, 2013 Daniel, Â I don't have a hood for my 90 mm Tel-Elmarit (thin) and have not had any flare issues, though I have always tended to use it with the sun behind me, shooting into more even light. I use a 39 mm skylight filter on it. How is the sharpness of the lens? If you have a look at about page 11/12 of Landscape/Travel photos (31 July), I have posted images from Israel/Palestine using the lens.
wda Posted October 26, 2013 Share #25 Â Posted October 26, 2013 These shots are more typical of the Tele-Elmarit lens than the equivalent Elmarit or Summarit which would be cleaner-looking in their rendering. However, your lens is superb for slightly dreamier portrayals of scenes and people.

Best Daniel Yes, flare is a bit on the heavy side, but not unusual given the light - you'd get similar results with many other lenses in those circumstances. I'd be more worried about the "foggy" bit - at the very least you should consider having the lens cleaned.
algrove Posted October 26, 2013 Share #27 Â Posted October 26, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Getting the lens cleaned plus original TE purchase price, I would go for the 90 Elmarit-M which I earlier said was my choice over the TE due to its flare prone tendencies. You get what you paid for.
Guest Emile de Leon Posted October 26, 2013 Share #28 Â Posted October 26, 2013 I did a lot of lens tests with Leica M & screw mount lenses last summer.. Here is the TE thin at F2.8 & F8...on Panasonic GH1. It is at its closest focusing distance..argueably its worse distance setting.. Mine has some haze inside.. Probably the dreaded TE disease.. Anyway..even with the haze..I think it did pretty well.. Small original TE rubber hood on front...strong light coming in from window..didn't phase it too much.. BTW.. These pics were severely reduced in DPI by photobucket..at F8..the resolution of the plant leaves and metal screen..is stunning..on my monitor.. At F2.8.. At F8.. Closeup..better DPI resolution.. Your TE seems a little too flarely to me..
