Advertisement Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Hi Rick, Take a look here R 35-70/2.8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MikeEvangelist Posted October 22, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2013 Even if I could afford it, I'd certainly be wary. This seller has never sold anything for more than about $50.

algrove Posted October 22, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2013 US1.00. And I was soooo close. Only 155 made-best zoom ever in the world.
naturephoto1 Posted October 22, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 22, 2013 US1.00. And I was soooo close. Only 155 made-best zoom ever in the world. I will have to live with its cheap relative that isn't too bad in its own right: 35mm-70mm f4 Vario Elmar. And it is much smaller and lighter and includes a macro mode. sc_rufctr Posted October 23, 2013 Share #10 Posted October 23, 2013 US1.00. And I was soooo close. Only 155 made-best zoom ever in the world. 155 total! That explains the BIN prices on eBay.
masjah Posted October 23, 2013 Share #11 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) Sadly, the price of second-hand samples of the 28-90 zoom (£4k ish?) renders it to many users almost as unattainable as the cult 35-70/2.8. I'm not sure I would choose to spend that sort of money if I hadn't already got one. For me, even if the 35-70/2.8 was in plentiful supply without any cult status, I think I would choose the superb 28-90 zoom. Especially as a travel lens, I would value the increased focal length range more than the maximum aperture at 70mm. Doubtless any differences in optical quality would not be significant in practical use. I have read reports in the fairly distant past that some samples of the cult 35-70/2.8 do not preserve its focus setting throughout the whole of its zoom range, that is to say, it should be regarded as a vari-focal lens rather a true zoom. Does anyone have any reliable information on this? Edited October 23, 2013 by masjah
algrove Posted October 23, 2013 Share #12 Posted October 23, 2013 I thought it did. Have to get mine out to know for sure. The manual makes no mention of this.
masjah Posted October 23, 2013 Share #13 Posted October 23, 2013 I thought it did. Have to get mine out to know for sure. The manual makes no mention of this. That's exactly why I asked. I definitely recall reading a report to that effect a good while ago, and it surprised me very much at the time.
biglou Posted October 24, 2013 Share #14 Posted October 24, 2013 It does preserve focus when you zoom in or out but what may happen is an accidental move of focus, very light and easy to turn. The macro position also allows very high quality pictures.

dkCambridgeshire Posted November 19, 2016 Share #18 Posted November 19, 2016 (edited) LOL, it will never sell, typo? Gary Not a typo Gary … very scarce lens and would likely cost more if still available new. See Leica Pocket Book 8th Edition for its impeccable specification. dunk Edited November 19, 2016 by dkCambridgeshire
gbealnz Posted November 19, 2016 Share #19 Posted November 19, 2016 Hmmm, misread it Dunk, sorry. It is a nice looking lens, then. Quick glance had me thinking the "ordinary" 35-70. Wrong. Gary

Gary There are three Leica 35-70R lenses - four if you count both of the 35-70/3.5 Sigma designed models … and five including the Angenieux but which does not appear in The Leica Pocket Book 8th Edition. dunk
