Anyone have personal experience with this lens? I've read reviews by Ron Scheffler, La Vida Leica, Ken Rockwell, and others about this lens, and most seem quite favorable (particularly when considering performance v. price). I am looking for a fast wide for an M240, and looked at the Summilux 21 f/1.4 in-person today at Samy's. I found it to be very large and ungainly, and I'm not sure I can justify the high price tag for lens that doesn't seem to be all that popular (used ones are already available for around $5000, so it may not be a great investment lens either). I haven't yet had the opportunity to get my hands on one of the Ultrons to compare, though pictures on various review sites indicate that it is about the same size as the Summilux. Any feedback on this optic from firsthand experience would be quite welcome.

Thanks!

It's an excellent lens. I love it even more on the M240 than I did on the M9.

Here's a M9 photo from an earlier thread, which you may find helpful too:

Thanks for your thoughts, and the samples. How do the ergonomics compare to, say the Leica 21mm Summi? I haven't and probably won't have a chance to compare the two without buying at least the CV, but at price difference of 5X, I think I can take a little ergonomic imperfection as long as the image quality is good.

Anyone try shooting night skies with this lens?

I also have the CV 21 f/1.8 Aspherical Ultron and I love it. I compared it with a fellow leica club member's 21 Summilux and it was smaller and lighter. Also the fit and finish was just as good. After showing them the photos taken with both they agreed that the CV lens was on a par. I then asked them why they didn't purchase CV lens, they said that they would never hold their value like the Leica Lens. I responded by saying that I still had the $4000 in the bank and left it at that!

It's actually more than $4000... I just ordered a CV for $1150; the Leica sells for $7200, so the difference for a new lens is $6000! Also, I seriously question whether the 21 'Lux is going to be a good "investment" lens going forward. I recently saw a minty LNIB one selling for $5000 from a dealer; that's a pretty big hit the to new lens price. I suspect ultra-fast wide angle primes are little too niche to go up in value over time like the 75mm f/1.4.

Regardless of price, at f/2 the Ultron 21 mm clearly is the better lens—less lateral chromatic aberrations, less vignetting, smoother bokeh, better sharpness near the frame's edges and corners. It's a big lens but still slightly smaller than the Summilux 21 mm.

Just got it a few minutes ago. I like it a lot (though the packaging leaves a little to be desired). I can see myself using this as a landscape lens quite a lot. It's also an easy street shooting lens, given the DoF even at wide apertures.

What lens profile do you prefer for it?
