50s on M240

Well, "3D effect" is as much about light, composition, and depth of field as anything else.

That said, both lenses you mention are stellar. The APO Cron offers subtly better separation between in-focus and out-of-focus elements - a quality which amplifies the effect you speak of.

I have m240, 50 lux still testing

Excellent 3d, but I heard others say non asph crom better on 240, I sold my 50 crom to buy 50 lux, awesome lens, but wish I had normal cr to compare on 240.. I love 50,s and may still buy a crom to compliment as both render differently

The 3D-rendering can be excellent for both lenses, but possibly even more so with the APO. I can think of three reasons for the difference between the two (sometimes seen, but in real shooting situations hard to detect):

Both the front and back focus-to-out-of-focus rendering of the APO are silky, silky, silky smooth. This smoothness is good, but not fully matched, by the Lux.

Secondly, the Lux doesn't have the same crisp in-focus rendering as APO when the lenses are shot at or near wide open. This contributes to a stronger 3D-rendering of the APO.

And finally, in my view, the out-of-focus rendering of the APO is even more neutral than that of the Lux.

Both lenses are stellar, but the 50-APO has become a favorite of mine...

How does the 3D effect of the 50mm summilux compare with the Apo Summicron on the M240? Really looking for people who have experience of both.

I agree with all of the comments posted above relating that the 50 APO ASPH renders depth perhaps better than the 1.4 ASPH (which I sold not long after receiving my APO in February).

Two additional points that I have observed in my favorite prints from those respective lenses...

The 1.4 delivers a fair amount of curvature of field, which drove me crazy! The APO has a forward flop in its focus plane at f/2 (I feel its best aperture), but it still is pretty much a predictable plane of focus instead of an undulation.

The corner to corner sharpness and depth rendered by the APO are remarkable. The 1.4 image is nothing like that in my experience.

But, people will not like portraits with the APO! You need the 1.4 ASPH, or softer really, for faces.

Hope this helps in your considerations.

Frankly ALL my other 10 or so 50's are collecting dust ever since receiving my first APO50.
