pauledell Posted October 7, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 7, 2013 Ece, A fine shot of a Circumzenithal arc (plate 340 National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Weather) which says it is an ice crystal phenomena, seen high in the sky and can only be seen when the sun is within 18-26 degrees of the horizon. This type of rainbow must be quite unusual as I have never seen one and I live in a place where the weather is a primary concern and something we are very aware of. I love Paul's explanation too. Paul, THANK YOU so much for your infusion of knowledge which makes this a whole lot better, making it a complete experience for me. I had NO idea about the scientific underpinnings of the phenomenon I was looking at. It was like a magical mystery tour A wonderous sight. It means a lot to me to learn the machinery behind it.
