mirekti Posted October 1, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted October 1, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bad luck today. I a bought a 75 Cron in March, and started using it as my M arrived late May. Â What happend today is the apperture ring became stiff and didn't click in between f/2-f/4 so I turned it from f/2 to f/16 couple of times in hope there's a lack of grease or whatever. I can hear how metal ribs aginst itself in certain positions. Not sure whether the blades produce this sound or something else. The aperture ring doesn't click in anymore. I mean it does on certain aperture marks, but not on most of them. Â As this lens is under warranty, where should I send it? Somewhere here in the US or directly to Solms? Will I have to cover all the costs of sending it back for a repair? How do you usually do it? I mean, do you use Fedex and pay for insurance? Will I eventually end up in paying a couple of hundred bucks to insure and send it for a repair even though it is under warranty? What would you guys recommend me to do or describe how you do it? Â I bought it from a big Leica dealer here in the US, but as the store is in another State I cannot just bring the lens to the store. Â Thanks
Advertisement Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Hi mirekti, Take a look here Apperture ring doesn't click in and it's hard to move. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted October 1, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted October 1, 2013 If you bought it from a local dealer, they will normally ship it for you. If this is a new US lens, it should have the three year Passport warranty, which is by Leica, NJ, so if you got it from an out of town dealer I'd call Leica in NJ and ask for shipping instructions. Did you register the warranty on-line?
mirekti Posted October 1, 2013 Author Share #3 Â Posted October 1, 2013 Did you register the warranty on-line? Â I registered the lens within the Leica owner's area if this is what you asked. Â I still cannot believe that something that is a pure mechanics, and made from Leica broke so easily. I mean, I'm an amateur and treat my equipment with special care. Than, all the engineering and quailty insurance that supposed to be top of the top, made in Germany, fails. I've always been hearing people used to say Leica lenses are made to last for decades, they are rugid and this and that...
TomB_tx Posted October 1, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted October 1, 2013 I bought a new 50 Summicron last year, and I think registered both on-line as you did, and mailed a warranty card. I received a 3-yr Passport Protection card and letter by mail after that. I'd suggest a call to NJ to ask about it. If this was a web purchase from a non-Leica dealer it could be grey-market and wouldn't have the Passport warranty, but would have the Solms warranty. That might mean sending it to Solms directly; but check with Leica NJ first.
mirekti Posted October 1, 2013 Author Share #5 Â Posted October 1, 2013 Ok, thanks a lot. I will get in contact with Leica NJ, and the dealer too. The dealer is authorized, and big. The warranty card was sent to NJ, but I never received anything. I do have a receipt that shows lens' serial number, my name etc.
mirekti Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share #6 Â Posted October 2, 2013 It seems, I fixed it somehow or better to say it got fixed by itself. Â Phase 1: I fiddled a bit with it between f/8 and f/16 because it worked well there, and now it seems it is almost as it was. It clicks in all appertures and in between them, however, going from f/4 towards f/2 there are still some more resistance and it doesn't click in as precise as for other appertures, especially from f/2.8 to f/2. Â Phase 2: After moving the apperture ring up and down, it became stiff again, and then after a couple of ring walks, again fine. Â All this is very peculiar. I mean, the mechanics shouldn't go off the balance, and come back, right? Could the reason be not having enough grease?

Perhaps a slightly misplaced part inside the lens that went back into place? In any event, the issue may occur again and, since it's still under warrant, I'd sent it in for a check. FTI Posted October 2, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted October 2, 2013 If I'm not mistaken, it could be the ball bearing that popped out and popped back. Â I really wouldn't mess around with the aperature ring too much and have it looked into by a specialist. You might cause more damage this way. Â Good luck. Personally I'd be worried about the possible internal damage that's been caused and send it back to Leica for a proper repair.
ldhrads Posted October 2, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted October 2, 2013 Send it to NJ, Call the service number on the website and ask for Carmen. Explain the situation and she will most likely send you a shipping label since it is under warranty. They are great at Leica NJ and can take care of most everything. Â If you can part with it for a bit, it's well worth the one over from the Leica NJ techs.
mirekti Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share #12 Â Posted October 2, 2013 They told me to send it, and it usually lasts four weeks to get it back. Not great news, but not too bad as well. Nobody mentioned shipping label (not sure I talked to Carmen, I just dialed in the extension number), so I paid for 2day shipping myself. I don't mind it if the lens comes back repaired. If I have multiple issues with I will request them to pay for the shipment. Up to now all seams to be fine, and the lady I talked to was cooperative and polite. Â Guys, thanks for the help!!
