90mm Cron APO ASPH Missing Screws

Hi,

I have a 90mm Cron APO ASPH and have noticed that the screw holes on the focus ring are missing the screws. I've looked at pictures online and see that some have screws and others appear to have them missing also. Is this correct or should I be sending it to Solms for repair?

Thanks,

James

There is something in my holes, but they appear to be deep and I seem to notice like a sealing paint or whatever down in each hole. Sorry for the lousy explanation, but I never really looked or noticed anything. Sure seems to work well for me so it seems I should not care and get out and use it.

Same here. There are three holes in the focus ring's grip, evenly spaced around the circumference, which look as if there were tiny screws missing. So it seems normal for this lens. I guess the holes are used by a special tool for service purposes.

Some samples have screws though.

Serial numbers should indicate the difference:

Mine with 38814xx (from 2000) has three tiny screws.

If one can name a serial number not much higher without screws we might get an idea when they changed it.

That's closer than I expected - from 2002. So we can guess that they changed it around 2001.

According to Thiele's "Kleines Fabrikationsbuch Leica Objektive (3. edit 2007) there was no batch of 90mm Apo Summicrons Asph in 2001 since he dates some batches with higher 3,8xxx,xxx numbers with 1999, and then 200 (3,918,401 to 3,918,600) from 2002.

According to Thiele's "Kleines Fabrikationsbuch Leica-Objektive (3rd ed. 2007)", there was no batch of Apo-Summicron-M 90 mm Asph in 2001 ...

According to Erwin Put's Leica Pocket Guide, my lens (bought used) is from a 2001 batch: 3918271 - 3918770, 500 pieces.
