CaptZoom Posted September 15, 2013 Share #1  Posted September 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) We're heading out to the local lobster festival in an hour or two. And I thought I let the members here choose which lens, rather focal length I take with me today. Of the focal lengths listed below, first FL to get two votes is the one I'll use today: 28mm 35mm 50mm 75mm 90mm  I'll post a pic or two in turn here. 01af Posted September 15, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted September 15, 2013 50 mm. On a 35-mm-format camera, always 50 mm. Especially when it's a Leica. What else?

CaptZoom Posted September 15, 2013 Author Share #9 Â Posted September 15, 2013 We're heading out, and it looks like 90mm won. Thanks for voting. This is going to be interesting, since 90mm would not have been my choice (I would've chosen a 50mm). Â Once again, thank you for participating. Â Here's my tally (including Jaapv's vote for each of the lenses and counting Marc's vote for 28mm): 28mm-1 35mm-2 50mm-1 75mm-1 90mm-2 The 90mm got to 2 first. CaptZoom Posted September 16, 2013 Author Share #13 Â Posted September 16, 2013 You accept milksop replies that vote for more than one focal lengths? Â I did. It wasn't a formal thing man, and I really didn't give ya'll much time. I would've naturally reached for a 50mm (like you mentioned), but I was hoping ya'll will nudge me towards choosing something I wouldn't normally choose. And in that respect, this little survey was a success. I'll post a pic or two later.

marknorton Posted September 16, 2013 Share #15 Â Posted September 16, 2013 Assuming the lobsters have yet to be put in a pot, the 90mm will keep you safely out of nipping distance. Unless of course you want to use the 90mm macro...

CaptZoom Posted September 16, 2013 Author Share #17 Â Posted September 16, 2013 Some observations: -It was frakking hot, and the sun was harsh...almost brutal today. -Using the 90mm in a crowded space turned out not to be as cramped as I thought. -Lens of choice: 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M with built in hood (last/latest produced version); camera was an M9. -The harsh sun really exaggerated the already contrasty lens; though in a few shots where the lens flared, the increased contrast came in handy. -The 90mm is too slow for me, specifically, the focus throw is too long for using it at a festival/street shooting (with practice, this issue can be improved). Initially I did loose a couple of shots, due to the time it took focusing. I use the lens often in the studio, and today was the first time I felt it to be slow. -I started at f/8. Once I got comfortable, I moved up to f/5.6 and used f/2.8 for a few shots where I thought appropriate. -It definitely felt a bit weird using such a long length on the street. Not having to get close took some getting used to and felt voyeuristic at times. Normally, I would use a 50mm for this type of stuff. -PP was done in LR -No more than 3 minutes were spent on any of the photos. Most were done in considerably less time. -BW conversions were done in SilverFX2 (to save time) -Almost all the images are cropped. Apart from trying to conserve pixels, I see no reason to stick with aspect ratios determined by manufacturers. -Of the 80 photos taken today, I'm happy with one. -I had six miss focused photos. -Turns out, I didn't take a single photo of a lobster! -BW photos first; color second. Otherwise the photos are in chronological order. -- -- -- -- Sight diagonals -- -- -- -- Family Selfy -- -- -- -- Shades are all the rage (and fashionably age appropriate)
