Which M 28mm elmarit version?

Planning to purchase a 28mm elmarit for my M camera. There are many versions. Any comments that would help me decide on which one to consider? Sometimes the older versions have unique characteristics. Thanks for all your thoughts.:)

Santa Claus got me the latest 2.8/28 Elmarit ASPH and it's been a dream, for several reasons:

1. Inexpensive for new (by Leica norms). :)

2. New=Warrantee

3. So small.

4. Allegedly super sharp but I shoot almost nothing but Tri-X and Eastman 5222 so that is a non-benefit to me right now. I can say it's rendering with those emulsions has been wonderful. I have some Copex somewhere so I'll have to drag that out soon.

Happy shopping!

i've been back to this thread for good ideas before each new lens purchase. if you're a fan of mandler lens designs, or already have other mandler designs in your camera bag, i think you'll find the right 28 elmarit here.

isn't there one for sale here or on RFF right now?

good luck

I am a bit boring on the subject, because I am a big fan of the V4 pre-aspherical. It will be cheaper than a new asph, and not as contrasty. You may or may not like that. I also like the 28 Cron, but I think I actually prefer the earlier lens. It's fine wide open, and all around impressive. Even Mr. Puts thought it was state of the art, although the art changes. The 46 mm front end causes some blockage in the lower right, but for me it is not an issue. Silky focussing. I think you have to define what you are looking for.

The asph is by far the "best", but the preasph elmarit is not bad at all, and the difference to the asph is not that much. One thing with the the pre asph version is the hood, it is clip on and very big! I prefer the never screw on types which stays on the lens.

Would you consider 28 Elmarit v3. E49?

I think this lens produce very nice images with old style color rendition, medium sharpness and moderate contrast.

However, one point I am not very satisfied with this lens is the size of it. It's not small in comparing with 28/2.8 asph...

Yes, definitely!

"Medium" sharpness!? "Moderate" contrast!? Are you aware that in its time (i. e. '70s and '80s), this lens was considered the world's best 28 mm lens for 35-mm format? Sharpness and contrast are in no way medium or moderate.

That said, the later 28 mm Elmarits (i. e. Elmarit-M E46 and Elmarit-M Asph) are even sharper—but only by a minuscule margin. If you want the character of rendition of the '70s then the Elmarit 28 mm E49 will be a good choice ... but don't expect more than just subtle differences to the later models. It's a sharp lens even by today's standards.

I'd pay the extra for the asph for the compactness alone, but I also prefer the rendering of more modern lenses when it comes to wide angles.

If you don't have to have leica you might consider the 28 m-hexanon. That lens is so ridiculously good especially in the corners (handily beating the two copies of The elmarit asph I compared it to) that I could only justify keeping the asph on account of size and brand lust.
