Mixalis Posted September 2, 2013 Share #1  Posted September 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) In Mykonos you may visit St. George's and light a candle for one euro or step into the adjacent Louis Vuitton emporium to spend a good deal more. With hardly a hope of redemption. Perhaps this shot would be better captioned as "St. George and the Handbag". Leica Monochrom and 35mm Summicron ASPH Welcome, dear visitor! Generally speaking, the closer one gets to cruise ship piers the more the historic heritage is polluted by commerce. Â Thanks, Stuart. You are right in your observation about cruise destinations. But it will take an awful lot of cruise ship visitors to do the Mykonians out of their churches. Estimates vary but there are between 500 and 1,000 churches on this tiny island, with over 40 of them concentrated in the minute, dolls-house-style main town, the Chora. All of them are Greek Orthodox except for the single Catholic establishment. The locals are very devout, possibly more so than the rest of Greek nation, and there is a regular parading between the various main churches. Undoubtedly the best time to experience this is Easter which, in the Orthodox calendar, often differs by several weeks from the western Easter. Â Sorry about all the detail but it may be of interest to visitors to this thread since I started the subject. Â Mike
