joel_o Posted September 1, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys I'm totally new here and I just bought my first Leica at an antique store of all places and it works and looks great and I actually got to speak with the original owner who says he bought it new in 1956 which is awesome and I picked it for $330 bucks. I've done some research the past few days and it is a red dial self timer with the serial no. 723996. And this is where I'm very confused... I looked up the serial numbers on your wiki Here and it says the range between no. 713001 and no. 729000 mean it is a "Leica IIIf Vorlauf ELC (EI+ELW.RD)" which to my knowledge means it is a Leica IIIf with a self timer (Vorlauf), from Ernst Leitz Canada (ELC), with Esercito Italiano (EI) (Don't know what that means), and Ernst Leitz Wetzlar (ELW), and RD for red dial. I'm just very confused with all this because it seems to contradict itself being that it says it's both from Canada and Wetzlar Germany? My camera is engraved Leica, DBP, Ernst Leitz, GMBH, Wetzlar, Germany. (Commas meaning where a new line begins) Any help would be amazing (Moderated) I will attach a couple pictures. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55196414/Leica%20IIIf%20723996/DSC02424.jpg https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55196414/Leica%20IIIf%20723996/DSC02430.jpg https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55196414/Leica%20IIIf%20723996/DSC02431.jpg Edited September 2, 2013 by erl

Rick Tardiff Posted September 2, 2013 Share #3 Posted September 2, 2013 713001-729000 is iiif vorl 1954, the vorl is delayed action, or self timer as we call it today. this isnt made/assembled in canada (ELC), that was 729001-73000. its a wonderful, clean looking camera. congrats

earleygallery Posted September 2, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 2, 2013 You have a nice looking example of a very useable camera. You can find out more at this little thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/13842-ltm-users-its-time-stand-up.html Buy a 5cm Elmar for it and you won't be disappointed. The camera might need a service (CLA) but it's probably worth running a film through it first. You need to trim the film leader - see here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/93117-do-you-have-trim-film-leader.html As JC has said you have a missing screw at the front of the camera - stick a small piece of tape over that for now to stop dust getting inside the rangefinder.
