Leica IIIf RD ST and maybe Canadian?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I'm totally new here and I just bought my first Leica at an antique store of all places and it works and looks great and I actually got to speak with the original owner who says he bought it new in 1956 which is awesome and I picked it for $330 bucks. I've done some research the past few days and it is a red dial self timer with the serial no. 723996. And this is where I'm very confused... I looked up the serial numbers on your wiki Here and it says the range between no. 713001 and no. 729000 mean it is a "Leica IIIf Vorlauf ELC (EI+ELW.RD)" which to my knowledge means it is a Leica IIIf with a self timer (Vorlauf), from Ernst Leitz Canada (ELC), with Esercito Italiano (EI) (Don't know what that means), and Ernst Leitz Wetzlar (ELW), and RD for red dial. I'm just very confused with all this because it seems to contradict itself being that it says it's both from Canada and Wetzlar Germany? My camera is engraved Leica, DBP, Ernst Leitz, GMBH, Wetzlar, Germany. (Commas meaning where a new line begins) Any help would be amazing (Moderated) I will attach a couple pictures. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55196414/Leica%20IIIf%20723996/DSC02424.jpg

713001-729000 is iiif vorl 1954, the vorl is delayed action, or self timer as we call it today. this isnt made/assembled in canada (ELC), that was 729001-73000. its a wonderful, clean looking camera. congrats

You have a nice looking example of a very useable camera. You can find out more at this little thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/13842-ltm-users-its-time-stand-up.html

Buy a 5cm Elmar for it and you won't be disappointed. The camera might need a service (CLA) but it's probably worth running a film through it first. You need to trim the film leader - see here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/93117-do-you-have-trim-film-leader.html

As JC has said you have a missing screw at the front of the camera - stick a small piece of tape over that for now to stop dust getting inside the rangefinder.

      Hey everyone,
I just got my m2 off ebay and had a look through the viewfinder only to see 2 main very noticeable spots. I attached a picture and the one on the lower left looks much dimmer and looks like a dot and a hair almost? It's kind of light greyish and I think it's a particle or dust but I'm not quite sure. However, in the middle the speck seems much darker (basically black) and more prominent. Could this be separation or is it another speckle of dust (imo it doesn't seem like one). If this has happened to you or you know what it is, any input on how to fix or your thoughts would would be greatly appreciated!
Also the shutter curtain on the front seems a little pushed forward and I can see the whole seam on it, is that normal? The curtain works 100% fine but I'm not sure if Im supposed to see the whole seam and overlap of the two curtains. On the back it stays slightly open by 1mm or so (didn't include a pic sorry)... should it cause a light leak? The camera was also recently CLA'd.
Lastly, the viewfinder has some "gold specks" which I think is separation, but I hope i'm wrong.
Please help if you can clarify, recommend a fix, or give any thoughts on ^^. Overall the camera seems amazing and none of the things I mentioned has really bothered me, but if I can learn more about them then it would be great.
      Thanks in advance,
      Ashley

Have searched for a while for the ultimate pouch (neoprene, not leather) for my Leica M lenses. Finally found one for the "average" Leica/Zeiss/Hexanon lens. This bag can also be hooked to the belt via the sewn loop, having enough room for a finger to reach for the lens. I cut off the adjacent carabiner as it was useless. Now I can stack two lenses on top of each other (I have 4) in my ONA bag. I am not naming any brands, I am not associated with anyone, just informing anyone that was after such product that this company is in Munich, Germany and on amazon.de. They have even smaller (XXS) bags but they are too tiny for Leica lenses. The proper size they offer for the pouch IMHO was XS (7cm x 8cm). The bags are not the icons of design, nor very beautiful, but they do get the job done.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR LEICA LENS POUCH EXPERIENCE(S).

Please share your opinion - if you have used or owned both lenses or any opinion on the topic. Mostly interested in comparison of render, sharpness, bokeh, pop etc. according to you - digital sensor or film.

Early reports indicated the Hexanons were inferior. According to LHSA "some Hexanon early samples were reported to have focusing discrepancies, long since resolved, and that adversely affected initial sales. The current consensus: Konica KM and Leica M lenses, even those with longer focal lengths and wider apertures, can be used interchangeably on both cameras without problems." Lots of posts ot the tiny flange difference between the cameras, but here we discuss the lens.

Mr. Rockwell even went as far as comparing the build of Summicron 50 (V) to the Hexanon-M 50 side by side and they indeed look almost identical. Check the pic on his webpage under the Hexanon topic.
I have recently acquired a Hexanon-M 50/2 (photographed below on my M) and it is a stellar performer, slightly better wide open (especially corners) compared to Summicron M 50/2 (IV) in all the tests I did.
      YMMV.

      Hello everyone!
I'm new to the leica film cameras but I came up a rather very nice iiif in great condition which comes with a summarit 50mm f1.5 going for about $550. This sounded like a pretty good deal to me, however, upon closer inspection the lens seemed to have a lot of haze (not sure about fungus) as when I performed the light test there were specks everywhere. It seemed to be internal and in the second glass?? Not sure how to fix it or if I even can, also the focus ring was pretty stiff (but that isn't a deal breaker or anything). Like I said, the body of the camera was in very good condition however the lens is my biggest concern. As most of you are owners/experts and such please help me out and let me know if this is a good deal or not.
      Thanks, Ashley
