Is the EVF a must have if you buy the new M

Can someone convince me of why an EVF is so important? I have my rangefinder and the screen. Wouldn't an EVF be lower resolution? What does it get me? Thinking of buying one… (I had one for my micro four thirds camera and sold it along with the EP-1).

It is not important - unless you need it for certain aspects of your photography. It is an auxilary system to be used at the choice of the user. So why should anybody need to convince you?

If you're actually happy using the screen for live view then you won't need the accessory EVF. But the EVF allows for a normal camera-holding position, gives a clearer view in the sunshine, provides a bigger virtual magnification, and is more comfortable to use with presbyopic eyes.

I find myself using it an awful lot in the vertical position to obtain a chest high perspective without dropping onto a knee. Like the angle finder C in canon language. Also at 45 deg when tripod mounted. It's a great little tool, but as the shot pace / spontaneity increases I drop back to the RF normally.

;) I just don't want him to be convinced that it is an absolute neccesity like a pink half-case.

Are you kidding me............Arte di Mano sent me a $500 gift voucher due to the fact that since my post on this forum sales went up on the burgundy 1/2 case 10 fold:D:D

I looked at the Olympus VF2 and agree it looks 10x better than the Leica one, the only problem is is the one I looked at was in Silver and I wanted it in Black so I took the silver one anyway, and popped into Halfords and go myself some matching burgundy red paint so I will mask it up tonight and paint it burgundy to match the case............it will cover the Olympus logo as well so know one will no the better.:D

Yes it's definitely worth it. I think it's a must have. That doesn't mean to say you have to use it all the time, but when live view is required it's a must. I will never use the screen for that, because it takes your eye too far away from the rangefinder and changes the subject distance by at least half an arms length. The EVF is therefore the only way. It's so light and small that it's easy to hide away when not required.

Ha ha Neil so get the Olympus VF2 but now get the eye cup for VF2.

You can get it here.

Olympus EP-9 Eyecup for VF-2 Viewfinder ShaShinKi.com - Malaysia's First & Largest Online Camera Shop!

Got mine and the VF 2; now waiting for my M 240 to arrive from Richard Caplan.

Fang I just emailed a guy on FleeBay in the US and asked if he would accept 150 for his which included the eye cup............if he agrees I will have it sent to a buddies house in laffeite :D

I have the VF2 (because I use it all the time on my x-vario) but havent felt the need nor the wish to use it on my M other than for checking if lenses are calibrated fine.

If I use 21mm so far I prefer my optial additional viewfinder, and for 135mm I put one the 1.4 magnifier.

I can see however that - specially for non moving subjects - using the EVF can help for even more accurate focus.

I photographed a festival concert on Saturday night with very low and localised lighting and some of the shots would have been virtually impossible without the EVF, or at least they would have been incredibly difficult to get as beautifully and perfectly in focus on exactly the point I chose, reliably, and time after time.

I've photographed many concerts but this time was the first with the EVF and it was a revelation.

Other times, in good light, outdoors and so on, I don't need it so I don't use it. But for its relatively tiny price I suggest buying one and finding out for yourself.

Simple question

Is the EVF a must have if you buy the new M..............personally I think they look ugly but then if it helps in making/taking better pictures then I guess ugly camera is the order of the day:D

No. It is not.

Unless............
