What's the serial number (first three or four digits)? And where's the "m" on the focusing scale when the focus is set to infinity—right above the f/4 DOF mark, or between the f/2.8 and f/4 DOF marks? And oh—does the hood add to the vignetting?

 

The serial no. Is 4196xxx. My m sits very close to the f2.8 DOF mark. I will check the vignetting in the next day or so.

Mine shows the red ring and is #4098xxx. Also m is between 2.8 and 4.0 and is like the right example.
same as above number M-1:1.4/21 ASPH no xxx

I see very little mechanical vignetting from the hood. The left image is with the hood and the right image is without the hood.

Mine was one of the first 2 in Canada; 4079xxx. M above f/1.4 mark. Looks like the right hand picture with red ring visible, except the aperture ring/focus ring interface region is like the left hand lens.

 

I had never considered that the OEM hood would produce mechanical vignetting, but it sure does. That's a first, I think. Usually lens hoods are way too 'loose'. I think I can fix this with my Dremel, though. The hood doesn't need the corner flanges that are responsible for the vignetting to hold filters in place.

 

If you really want less vignetting in a fast 21, consider the Voigtländer f/1.8. It's a lot better than the Summilux at all the wider apertures, although obviously not at f/1.4. It's also otherwise optically one of Cosina's best efforts. If it had been available at the time the Summilux came out, I think I might have gotten the CV lens instead. I've not been that impressed with many of the CV lenses, but the 21/1.8 is good.

Apart from white walls, has anyone been bothered by vignetting when actually taking pictures with this lens? Can't say I have, but maybe I'm not fussy enough.

Not me, and I have shot thousands of pictures with this lens

It is actually very subtle. The biggest hood induced vignetting is in the top left corner. The luminosity value in that corner is 30.6 with the hood and 33.6 without the hood.

 

The high optical vignetting in this lens should also be seen in the context of this class of lens. The iconic Zeiss 21mm produces 2.5 stops vignetting at f2.8 on the Canon 5d Mark II. The 21 Summilux produces 1.7 stops at F2.8. The highly regarded Canon 24mm f1.4 Mark II produces 3.2 stops vignetting at f1.4 which is the same as the Summilux.

One can find values according to the vignetting in the Leica technical data.

The value is given as a percentage (linear scale), f-stops follow a logarithmic scale.

Example: 50% is the half intensity, giving 1 stop vignetting.

 

At 15mm from the center (extreme corner of APS-C) the vignetting is:

1.4: 30% equals 1.7 stops

2.8 and smaller: 60% equals 0.7 stops

 

At 21mm from the center (extreme corner of FF):

1.4: 15% equals 2.7 stops

2.8 and smaller: 38% equals 1.4 stops

I use the GXR with the 5.6/12mm, giving 18mm.

Most of the time I forget the vignetting correction. I am happy with the pictures still.

Actually I purposely vignette my prints for obvious reasons so it just fits in with my style frankly.

I have a growing need and a huge want for this lens so have decided to pull the trigger on one. I'm rather excited so thought i'd bump this thread because I'd love to hear some more thoughts on it and hopefully see some pics as they don't pop up on flickr in great numbers.

Paul you will love it.............until I bought the Noctilux last month it was on my M9-P 95% of the time..........I love that lens and still do.

I only have two lenses now and that is the 21 lux and the 50 Noctilux 0.95:D:D

Paul due to the fact that it was a 21mm I had to get very close to them to get the picture and I could smell the latex..............well I think that's what it was:):)

I only have two lenses now and that is the 21 lux and the 50 Noctilux 0.95:D:D

 

I have both these lenses (but the 1.0/50 Noctilux E60) which are a very effective and versatile low light combo. The ability to hold the 21 Summilux at very low shutter-speeds really makes it the equivalent of a wide angle Noctilux.
