My 1.4/21 Summilux has the red ring and the series VIII filter rattles so I have inserted two small patches of thin adhesive teflon tape on the inside of the lens hood groove where the filter sits. These hold the filter snugly with no rattling.

I was thinking of getting an oring made on the rig to put in that groove ........what do you think?

Neil,

why don't you contact Leica about the pre-red ring lens and a red-ring upgrade!

though you may find that over time these early lenses become collectors pieces .

Regards,

Mark

What are you talking about mate.........you got me lost

Sorry, it's late, I'm tired, and should be asleep.....:o

I thought you meant that you had a pre-red-ring lens and wanted to put a red ring on your earlier lens.

Post deleted.

Regarding an O-ring to hold the filter in place without rattling, I'm not sure there's enough space for one but it would certainly be an elegant solution. You would need to find a perfectly sized ring and either work out how to hold it in place inside the hood or fit it around the filter ring.

If the filter is held in place too tightly you will have trouble slipping it out of the hood - it took me a little while to find the right solution.

Has anybody tried to remove the red ring ? Will that not eliminate the rattling by allowing the hood to screw in tighter ? It might even help a bit with vignetting.

I am not sure why the ring is there in the first place. The ring seems to be an afterthought. I could not find any Leica promotional material going back to Photokina 2008 that shows the ring. That includes press releases, brochures, LFI magazine etc.

Prototype or pre-production lenses often look slightly different from the regular production lenses ... and sometimes it's those prototypes which get photographed for the product promotion materials and sent out to beta-testers and early reviewers.

So it's not uncommon that pictures of a product are floating around which are slightly different from the actual product. This is not necessarily proof that there was a design change during production.

The o-ring certainly was there always. All Leica M lenses which sport the new-style screw-on hoods have one. In the early samples of the 21 mm Summilux, it just wasn't red.

That obviously can be an explanation. The only thing that do not make sense is the gap. I wonder if the thickness of the o-ring stayed the same. The promotional material including the engineering drawings shows the hood absolutely flush with the lens-body. The samples with the red ring shows a distinct gap. I have even desaturated some of the product shots to see if the red ring does not create the illusion of a wider gap but it makes no difference. It also does not makes sense to design a hood specifically for series VIII filters and then require people to use spacers to ensure that it do not rattle. One would have expected the filters to fit tightly at the exact point where the hood locks. In Sean Reid's review he says: " the hood, once tightened, holds the filter firmly in place".

Sean is wrong...........well maybe the lens he had had the filter fitting snugly but on mine it rattles to the point of being annoying :(

I had always assumed that the red ring on the 21 & 24 Summilux's was to act as a warning that removing the lens hood exposed the protruding front element with associated risk of damage.

Removing the red O-ring would not make any different to whether the filter rattles or not. The hood will only advance to a point where it is in correct alignment to the lens.

Would it be possible to mount an adapterring on the lens with a normal filter thread on the frontside?

Then, perhaps a normal (non Leica) hood can be bought from Enjoyyour..

For the hood the dimensions must be calculated, of course.

Filters wouldn´t be a problem anymore too. But with a super wide angle filters aren´t such a good choice. Besides you use an APS-C camera like me. I am thinking of buying a 21mm(!).

It exists : #14481

Leica E82 Filter Adapter for Leica 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M 14-481

E82 so that makes it very unwieldy especially with an even larger hood.

Nevertheless I bought one as such things tend to become discontinued and unavailable.

I used it a couple times while waiting for the B&W Orange and ND series 8 filters to arrive, but not since.

The largest diameter of the lens is 70mm, according to the technical data. In this range the filter size could be.

A technician should have a look at this, in order to propose a standard solution.

Or do you see a reason for choosing E80 size?

Sorted..........a wee slither of duct tape, you would think that Leica would add a small roll of the tape in the fancy box to stop the rattle.....LOL:D:D

Simple, elegant, cheap

The first two are compatible with the Leica philosophy.

Unfortunately not the third ;)

From my understanding the red ring is a warning item that the front element protrudes in front of the lens barrel. Same with the 18mm.

I have received my 21 Summilux from Robert White today (outstanding shopping experience as usual). The lens looks identical to the product shot on the left. There is zero gap between the hood and the lens-body. Although the o-ring is red you cannot see it because there is no gap.

What's the serial number (first three or four digits)? And where's the "m" on the focusing scale when the focus is set to infinity—right above the f/4 DOF mark, or between the f/2.8 and f/4 DOF marks? And oh—does the hood add to the vignetting?
