I've read through many of the posts and mostly see conjecture, "Well, Erwin Puts says, (point to graph with pointer), the longitudinal axis of the chromatic discrepancy...."

Any real users out there? Heading to BurningMan next week and wondering if this will be a good choice for early morning on the Playa (dessert), half naked girl with sun peaking over her shoulder, possibly a little pop of fill from my Bron pack and strobe.

A little flare would be cool, but not so much as to blow out the whole frame.

Thanks in advance.

Problems appear to be lens specific.

My copy of the 50 AA is fantastic with no flare unless you really make it happen, and no "central fogging" as had been reported by others.

I've been using apertures from 2 to 16, along with stacked filters and no problems.

I have used the APO all summer long in the strong light of Jackson Hole, WY. I'll find some images shot into the light and post them. But in the my belief, from having taken a few hundred shots this summer, the lens has no problem shooting into bright light.

The whole flare issue originated on LaVida Leica. After contact with Solms it turned out to be a production error in one -or a very few- lens(es). Leica rectified it and adapted the production process, according to the site.

The whole issue came from a Chambers' review and pics on the LUF if memory serves and Leica did not communicate officially about it so far.

LaVida claims they did, He will not publish the mail, though.... Possibly the origin was Digiloyd, I do not read his site.

Same here. I have not shot hundreds but I have tried to make mine induce the CVF and could only make it flare in conditions that you expect it will. Mine was probably a March delivery that was bought by me a few months later. It was forgotten in the back store room of a Leica shop. They moved about the time it was delivered to them.

I'll become a real user when i'm reassured that all 50/2 asph samples are not like jim.grover's.

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-lenses/291544-apo-summicron-50-2-asph-central-5.html

Isn't it the opposite around, that jim.grover's APO 50 ASPH is (likely) an outlier? (see statements and documentation in the linked URL)

I can only talk for my M240+APO50 combo. No more flare/veiling/loss of central contrast than from the 50 Summilux, possibly/likely less. Yes, flare and loss of central contrast can be seen now and then, but only when you would expect the lens to flare. As previously stated, I am very happy with the APO 50 ASPH.

I've watched your pics with real interest and i thank you sincerely for taking the time to share them but i won't take the risk of ordering this lens w/o making sure that CVF can be fixed by Leica if any. So far i still ignore if they consider CVF faulty or not, which doesn't reassure me that much.
