Malvolio Posted August 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all Am the proud owner of a new 28 Cron and was wondering, do any users out there forgo the hood and use the lens without one? I ask because I am aware that the franken hood that comes with the lens has been reported to contribute to loosening the front element group; also, the hood does intrude into the viewfinder more than I expected. Any thoughts? M
Advertisement Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Hi Malvolio, Take a look here 28 Summicron without a hood - OK?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rramesh Posted August 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 20, 2013 I use it quite regularly without the hood and only a filter. Did not notice anything adverse. The lens is quite flare resistant if I might say. Occasionally I use a Contax GG-1 filter (copy version off e**y as it is quite compact.
IWC Doppel Posted August 20, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2013 2,500 pictures or so with the 28mm, never had a problem, hood on hood off or filter on filter off. I tend to keep my 12466 hood on now, only because I like it enough not to want to take it off in the evening or indoors

lct Posted August 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2013 No because of flare when using a filter and w/o filter the front element is not protected any more. Rick Posted August 20, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2013 I have shot mostly w/o hood. I agree that filters add flare. The hood on any lens adds protection against bumps to the front of the lens. I think this is the most important reason to use hoods. Having said that, I never use hoods.

Bill W Posted August 21, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 21, 2013 I use the 12589 model which is for the older 35 f1.4 actually. It is much smaller tha the provided monster. There are several expensive options out there. There are + and - thoughts as well on all options. I prefer a hood myself. Read through the other threads on the subject. I bought my hood several years ago and it is available at B&H for $115.
algrove Posted August 21, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 21, 2013 2,500 pictures or so with the 28mm, never had a problem, hood on hood off or filter on filter off. I tend to keep my 12466 hood on now, only because I like it enough not to want to take it off in the evening or indoors Same for me, but not that many images with it. The little weight of the 12466 lets you forget you have a hood attached.

250swb Posted August 22, 2013 Share #11 Posted August 22, 2013 I find that if I position myself correctly behind the camera, and don't sit looking adoringly at it through a soft focus filter, the hood can hardly be seen. So ugly or not I use the standard hood, it is quick to use, especially if you use filters, and does an excellent job. I also have the svelte 35mm Summilux 12589 hood, which indeed does show less in the viewfinder. The problem with that is the large diameter locking ring is very close to the aperture ring, which makes it particularly difficult to find an f/stop quickly, and especially if you have gloves on. So that never gets used, I'd rather the hood be ugly and helping me take a snap, not beautiful and getting in the way. Steve
viramati Posted August 22, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 22, 2013 I tend to use it mostly without the hood because it hides quite a bit of the frame. Not a problem on the new M if using the EVF.
