maxofrome Posted August 14, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted August 14, 2013 very interesting shot, I like the 3 people in background, hidden by the darkness that look at the camera (and you behind it) in contrast with the old lady that seems really dreaming something beautiful. Look likes a painting of Caravaggio.
pauledell Posted August 15, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted August 15, 2013 A wonderful picture with the lighting directed on the lady like a spotlight while the others seem to be obscured in the shadows of the background. Nice colors and sharpness. The lady seems to be dreaming of younger days and livelier times. Â Paul
Karl G Posted August 15, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted August 15, 2013 Dan, beautiful lighting, exposure and expression on the subject with lovely painterly effect. I like the comparison to Caravaggio.
christoph_d Posted August 15, 2013 Share #6  Posted August 15, 2013 Hi Dan,  Like it, a mood and a story well captured. Many people will look at this picture like the lady looks out of it.  Regards  Christoph

250swb Posted August 17, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted August 17, 2013 Excellent work Dan. If I were to offer a suggestion it would be that the face's in the background are distracting, particularly those on the right hand side who seem to be at odds with the feeling imparted by the central figure. I would burn them in much darker so they recede further into the background. In fact I would take the entire right hand side of the image down a few levels and reduce the saturation of the red bags as well. Just an idea. But this is IMHO.
christoph_d Posted August 19, 2013 Share #12  Posted August 19, 2013 @ maxofrome  I feel the same, those people do remind me of some shadowy figures lurking in a Rembrandt painting...  Rgds  Christoph
250swb Posted August 19, 2013 Share #13 Â Posted August 19, 2013 Very interesting, because my feeling is the opposite, being the figure in background adding "drama" to the shot, being awake and in observation instead of the main subject. But this is IMHO. Â But those figures are clearly aware of the photographer, they are not looking at the central subject, or at each other, they are suspicious (or even in the appearance) of the person taking the photograph. So they break up the bond between the woman and the camera, they add suspicion to the image, so it is no longer 'Day Dreaming', it is 'What is he taking a photograph of?' There are plenty of times when people acknowledging the presence of the photographer works, but not when they are a sideshow. If you took them away completely the image would stand as a wonderful photograph, but given they are there it is about management to make it a wonderful photograph. I like the tension counterpoising elements in a photograph can create, but these guys create an uneasy drama and suck it all the way over to one side of the frame, to such an extent I think it could be an interesting idea to crop it square.
