fotografr Posted August 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2013 I've seen these and my recollection is that they are edible (but don't hold me to that).
platypus Posted August 9, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 9, 2013 Bill, It's nice to see this interesting mushroom specimen photographed in b&w rather than (the more usual) colour. How enterprising of it to manage get so high up the tree! Dee.

Northwest Wanderer Posted August 9, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted August 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you everyone for the kind comments. Brent, I'm not sure if these are edible. They are as hard as a rock to the touch. Dee, these are tree dwelling mushrooms and cause decay in the tree. Somewhat of a parasite in a way. Glad you enjoyed seeing it in b&w. I'm not very good with b&w so this was a learning experience for me. Paul, I wanted to try a different look so b&w with some Lightroom adjustments made for an interesting experience. The whites were off the scale so I had to really tone them down. Still learning how to manage that. Karl, Glad you noticed the texture. That's one thing I really tried to bring out. Stuart, next trip to the forest I'll take my tripod and try for detailed images of these strange polypores. They remind me of what a flying saucer might look like if it crashed into a tree.
