Capture 1version 7 and M9 High ISO performance

I have recently acquired Capture 1 Express 7 to be able to use the latest engine for RAW conversions. On this forum, so far I have read that the consensus on M9 use is up to 1250 ISO. (there is a long thread about night performance improvement).

I have made a few tests with C1Express 7 at 1000 and 2000 ISO. The 1000 ISO results are fantastic, without disturbing noise. I have also seen that at ISO 2000 color files have a very very acceptable noise, especially when the exposure is correct. On underexposed frames, below 3 F stops , shadows start getting noise but the software was even able to handle this OK.

has anybody else made the same observation ? Is C1version 7 improving the high ISO range of M9 well into the 2000's ?

I found the new render engine is a huge improvement regarding noise control. What ISO setting you’re happy with now depends on taste and (in my case) light quality: ISO 2500 in daylight isn’t a problem at all; in low incandescend light, though, I find everything above ISO 800 not very usable.

ISO 2500, 1/500s, f/8, 1:1 crops:

Capture One 7 default noise/sharpening settings

My usual “High ISO” preset, including added fine grain

You could get it a lot cleaner (luminance noise reduction is at 50 in this example, plus the added grain), but I like some noise in my images.

Sascha,

Thanks a lot for these images.

To me the 2500 has a special signature in your high ISO treatment, and therefore, highly usable in a pleasant way.

This corresponds also to my observations. I will multiply the experimentation with higher ISO than 1000.
