m240 Faulty power switch? Self timer operating when not set

it just happened again:confused: and I didn't have a chance to capture it on film... I could photograph the dial sitting firmly planted on S mode (where I always have it and never bump it- I virtually never use C mode, and only use the timer on a tripod).

I had just convinced myself it had fixed itself again too. Hope springs eternal (and is eternally dashed... in the end). So that's that: I was going to suggest to Leica either a full replacement: or a written guarantee that if the error occurred again the camera would be replaced immediately. I already happened again so it has to be a replacement camera. I will start making the calls tomorrow.

I have a question: could this issue be recorded in the full metadata? Does it record if the camera is on S, C or timer mode? If it showed the camera on S mode- but the self timer coming on- then I would have my proof.

also I just noticed my photo #'s in lightroom: they start at L1009912

Does this mean my 'new' camera has fired off over 9900 shots already?? That's more than I put on my M9-P in two years:rolleyes: and I have only shot maybe 300 on the M myself.

UK law and Australian law have some common features, but I'm not sure how far that goes in consumer issues. Even though in this case the fault appears to be Leica's, in the UK it is the responsibility of the retailer to sort it out, or provide a replacement, or provide a refund; what the manufacturer will or won't do is irrelevant - in law. The retailer may not see this as fair, but that is who your "contract" is with, not not Leica. Is that the same case with you? Has your retailer offered any redress?

PS I'm not a lawyer!

No that only means you have, at one point, inserted a card with a filenumber L1009xxx.Or somebody in Leica CS did so.

There is a lot of hidden data in the EXIF that you can not normally see with most EXIF data shown in applications like LR or C1. However, it may be worth looking at the EXIF of the captured image. If you send me the file when I get back home from my current business trip on Friday I could try and decode it for you. Just PM me for my email.

Thanks for the offer John. Can you get that data from a downsized Jpeg? here is the image: I pressed the shutter precisely 12 seconds before it was taken- dial set firmly to S mode- I was running inside to (vainly try to) get my iphone to video it when the shutter fired:

It is true.

I am confused then... I just checked the first image I took with the camera - it was number Ll000001.

then after I got the camera back from Solms- I inserted a card- reformatted it- as I always do- took a shot- and the number was L1009912?

How does that work?

I would need the full original JPG or DNG file to ensue I had an unmodified EXIF.

when I processed the DNG in LR I exported it and selected 'include full metadata'? but if it isn't all there- how can I best send you the large DNG file? I am on a mac- and have access to their (NSA riddled) cloud- but I have never used the feature...

Or instead of sending it- is there any way I can look at the metadata myself easily? If I could access it I could post the text here for expert evaluation... Do I need some kind of program? I am a complete imbecile in these matters....

when I ouput that JPEG I selected included 'full metadata'.

Jaques,

It requires a special command line program on your Mac. I have it on my Mac at home but not here on the road with me. You can try and upload to my public DropBox folder

It require special effort to decode the information so it is easier for me to look and see if it is there rather than trying to explain to you how to do it.

If it won't let you, let me know and I will provide an alternate means but not today as I have to get some sleep.

really? Yours is the first other account of this issue I have seen posted anywhere. It is very annoying isn't it? Whilst I am sorry for you- I am happy to hear that this is not totally isolated to my camera. Perhaps if it occurs to more users Solms will be more inclined to believe me- and to figure out why it happens.

The camera will remember the highest number used, so in your case that is the number of the last image on the card used in Solms. Simply reset the numbering. There is procedure for it.

Ok thanks Jaap. This never happened on the earlier M digital did it? And am I correct to assume that you can no longer tell how many shots the camera has actually fired?

I have uploaded the image to my own dropbox John- I couldn't manage to load it direct to yours... I will just PM you the link now- thanks in advance for your offer to have a look at it. If any other meta data sleuths are interested to delve into it let me know and I can send the link to you.

Jaques, it depends on the camera settings for file numbering. You can also reset or edit the file numbers too.

With a newly formatted card the camera would normally then continue the sequence from its (internally stored) memory of the last frame shot. As some one mentioned that may be from whatever the technician used when testing your camera. If you insert a card which has existing files on it, then the camera will normally continue that sequence instead.

There are other possible variations based on whether you have more than one folder on the card too.

You should notice in the DNG file, the self timer mode is captured. In the above it was = 0. Please send me three DNG files. One with self timer shot set to 2 sec, one with self timer off and set to single shot and one with switch sent to Continuous so we can see the respective field values. They should all be from M240.
