efreed2754 Posted August 19, 2013 Share #41 Posted August 19, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) While M is on order been thinking about a kit for month long vacations which we do once a year and two two week trips away from home/the mother lens load. Current thinking for base kit is 18, MATE, 75 Summicron plus 1002.8 Macro with APO double extender. Can add 35 Summcron or 50 Lux or 180 4.0 flex and then select a few depending on daily travel. IkarusJohn Posted August 19, 2013 Share #42 Posted August 19, 2013 Away for 4 days last week. As an experiment, took Monochrom, M9, 21-28-50-90 and usual clobber in my Monochrom-9 bag. Way too heavy all round. In London and Paris next month - trying to decide whether to leave the M9 or Monochrom behind. My sense is that the M9 will push me towards taking general shots, whereas the Monochrom will make me work harder. Even though only taking B&W means I will miss the option of colour, will it matter? John, take only the Monochrom, 28 Summicron and 50 Summilux (not the uber-Lux if you dare:D). Exercise some discipline Have a nice trip. IkarusJohn Posted August 19, 2013 Share #44 Posted August 19, 2013 Yes, I'm beginning to tend in that direction - the critical point will come when I am packing the bag!
Jeff S Posted August 20, 2013 Share #45 Posted August 20, 2013 I'd rather have a back-up body for travel than an extra lens. Take one lens for each, and exercise your discipline that way. And eliminate some 'clobber,' whatever that may be. Jeff
MarkP Posted August 20, 2013 Share #46 Posted August 20, 2013 you could always pack the 21 and 90 but decide on only two lenses per outing, unless you're going to lie in bed the night before agonizing over which two lenses to take out:D:D:D
IkarusJohn Posted August 20, 2013 Share #47 Posted August 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The agonising only comes when I'm holding the lens in my hand looking at my bag. I find using my lenses a voyage of (re)discovery. I'll use the Monochrom with the 50 Summilux, then pick up my M9 and 90 Summicron, and be blown away by the images. I suspect I'll take the Monochrom, with a 50 Summilux on the camera, and the 28 & 90 on a double ended cap - not too heavy and reasonably compact. Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers John PS - or maybe the Noct on the camera, with the 28-90 on a double ender ...
lct Posted August 20, 2013 Share #48 Posted August 20, 2013 Nice colours in Paris though. I would not limit myself to B&W in any country anyway but it's just me.
philipus Posted August 20, 2013 Share #49 Posted August 20, 2013 Nice colours in Paris though. I would not limit myself to B&W in any country anyway but it's just me. I agree. But was this not a thread about the perfect lens kit, not the perfect camera body kit? Perhaps you should just bring a film M, John? About lenses - yesterday I shipped off my M4 and the TTL to Solms for some TLC which means I'm left with my Leica II and screwmount lenses. In the weeks to come, perhaps at the One Challenge, too (which I hope to be able to make it to) depending one how long Solms needs, I'll be shooting with my 50 Summilux, which I look forward to very much. lct Posted August 20, 2013 Share #50 Posted August 20, 2013 35/50/90 slow or fast depending on mood and season. Now 35/2 asph, 50/2.8 v2 and 90/4 macro with an M240... But i have a second bag just in case...
gberger Posted August 20, 2013 Share #51 Posted August 20, 2013 Based on several lengthy visits, IMO, Paris is a 35mm City.
Jeff S Posted August 20, 2013 Share #52 Posted August 20, 2013 I suspect I'll take the Monochrom, with a 50 Summilux on the camera, and the 28 & 90 on a double ended cap - not too heavy and reasonably compact. Just hope that your MM functions well the whole time. A back-up body could stay in the hotel safe and not add volume or weight when out shooting. One body was fine in my film M travel days. I have a different view since it became a computer. YMMV. Jeff
349A Posted August 20, 2013 Share #53 Posted August 20, 2013 Brought my 25mm Zeiss, 35mm pre fle and 50mm Lux to Paris last month. Kept the 35 Lux on the entire trip. 35mm is really perfect in Paris.
BenMathes Posted August 20, 2013 Share #54 Posted August 20, 2013 For my work- I find the 35 1.4 asph is a constant, a 50 1.4, and a 90 2.8 and one M9 body all fit in a small Domke satchel with 3 extra batteries and 4 extra 16 gig cards- cleaning cloth, compass, flashlight, and I am good to go! my ipad fits in the back of the Domke and an adapter to load pics onto my iPad fits in the same front pocket with cleaning cloths, compass and extra cards! perfect for me! IkarusJohn Posted August 20, 2013 Share #55 Posted August 20, 2013 I'm not really a 35mm person for some reason - where i would take the 35, I prefer the 28. Taking an extra body does have merit - 28 on one body, 50 on the other, and 90 spare ...
philipus Posted August 21, 2013 Share #56 Posted August 21, 2013 Personally I find Paris to be great regardless of focal length, just like any other city. YMMV. I'm not really a 35mm person for some reason - where i would take the 35, I prefer the 28. Taking an extra body does have merit - 28 on one body, 50 on the other, and 90 spare ... I agree - I have begun using two bodies, one for B/W and one for colour which works great until I need the lens on the B/W body for a colour shot. Perhaps one should have two copies of each lens... ananda Posted August 21, 2013 Share #57 Posted August 21, 2013 28 Elmarit ASPH (small and light) 50 Summilux ASPH Of course I'd like the APO 50 Summicron, but I am not going to quibble with what I have to mount on my M. If someone would give me a 90 Summicron APO, I'd be forever their friend, but methinks such friends really don't exist.
Carduelis Posted August 21, 2013 Share #58 Posted August 21, 2013 I'd rather have a back-up body for travel than an extra lens. Take one lens for each, and exercise your discipline that way. And eliminate some 'clobber,' whatever that may be. Jeff I am also for having a back-up body for travel. Regarding your suggestion, I would take my 24 mm Elmar f3.8 lens on my Ricoh GXR and 50 mm Summicron M f2 lens on my Leica M 240 camera as a default and swap them around making use of having a full frame and 1.5x cropped sensor. The 24 mm Elmar is such an outstanding lens that I would settle for having to acquire the 35 mm focal length via the Ricoh GXR.
IkarusJohn Posted August 22, 2013 Share #59 Posted August 22, 2013 Some quite rightly say that taking only a Monochrom might be limiting (I'm going to London too), and having a backup body might be wise. That rather suggests that taking both the M9 & Monochrom makes sense - same charger; same camera, effectively, which is nice. Lens selection becomes a bit more critical, as weight is an issue with two bodies. I'm thinking 21-35-75 for something different. All Summiluxes, but with a mix of wide, modern and classical Mandler - it might make a pleasant change ...
Jeff S Posted August 22, 2013 Share #60 Posted August 22, 2013 Two issues combined here, I think. One reason for two cameras is to have a back-up if one fails, and that camera can stay in a hotel safe until needed (hopefully not). Another reason is to work with two cameras, either together or separately, for different photo needs. This introduces various considerations, photographic as well as logistical. I was referring primarily to the former. BTW, I took trips for many years with only b/w film; not limiting at all, given my preference at the time. Digital is another story...for me.
