APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging

I finally made it to the manor again, so here is a pair of photos with the Summicron 50/2 AA at f16, the second one overexposed, as requested by lct.

Both were taken at ISO 200, the first was exposed 1/90 sec and the latter photo 1/45.

The sun was not shining into the optics, but the inside of the built in shade was illuminated by the sun. No shade was used, hand, or otherwise.

I cannot detect any central fogging or veiling in either one, suggesting again that Solms has been able to correct the lens.

I think for your test to be conclusive we should see every lens you have with the same shot from correct exposure low f-stop to the f16/f22 over exposure range. I am still not sure this lens has potential in my bag.

You know better yet you should print these out A3 and send them to each of us.

Algrove!

Thanks for your comment.

It is not really my purpose to convince anyone, I'm just reporting what I see in my amateur amateur capacity. Rigorous testing is beyond me.

I am happy to see that the flaring behavior of he lens that I saw last summer was essentially diminished after reparation in Solms

I happened to photograph the same scene with my Noctilux at f16 on my Leica M today, see below. The link to the DNG is here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/i09qvnaz3nuvv53/URxf5okqbT

Thanks for your compliment, Algrove !

As to printing, I have made a few attempts at it, but the results have shown that I need more training, plus perhaps a calibrated Eizo display etc

I only started printing 2 years ago and that is now my most satisfying result from all the hard work. For me it completes the circle. I seldom post because I feel it is not a finished product on a screen.

PM me if you want/need any suggestions on how/what got me going with printing. BTW, I do not own an Eizo.

But printing your work need not preclude posting and visa versa!

I have a background of working in photographic printing and so print all my images that pass muster, though unfortunately not larger than A3+ as I only have an Epson R3000.

I agree with your remark about the finished product, however there is a place for both prints and for images posted online, just as there is for film and digital. Why restrict yourself?

Of course I post to photo friends for comment, etc.

Brand new is fine.

Sorry for not going through all 912 posts.

Can someone please summarize what do we know about this issue at the moment, such as:

1) What was the cause ?

2) What was the fix ?

3) Are fixed lenses ok ?

4) What should I check (e.g. serial number) if I need to rent or buy the lens second hand.

Thanks in advance.

I think the short answer is roughy this. Some number of the early models (420xxxx serial number range I think) exhibited this issue. Mine is in that range and never did. The fix is to send it to Leica and they'll fix it. I've read some people say the lens didn't come back quite the same, but I don't know the details on that. As for what to check, take a shot with the sun low in the sky coming in at an angle (think a backlit portrait). It'll flare obscenely if you have the problem. I would have expected this sort of a shot to reveal it, but I've never seen it in my early copy.

Thanks for the info. Great portrait in your link !

I wonder if there is anyone with a higher serial number lens that had this issue.
