euston Posted July 1, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted July 1, 2013 Stingingly pretty. What are your thoughts on the X Vario? I’m enjoying it very much, Brent. I take a lot of flower and plant pictures and I find it perfect for that using the 70mm end of the zoom. Unusually, that’s the end of the zoom which does close-up, which often means that you can fill the frame with a smallish botanical subject. Because you can use this lens wide open with no loss of IQ it is quite easy to get a decent amount of separation of the subject from the out-of-focus background and, to my eye, the bokeh is very pleasing. The strength of the camera lies in the lens which, I reckon, is well up to Leica standards. I’ve only had the camera a week but so far I’m impressed. Frankly, I’ve been amazed at the internet hostility towards it. The lens is plenty fast enough for me, especially as it can be used wide open throughout its range and at high ISO settings. I haven’t had the problems using auto focus that some people have reported, probably because, more often than not, I use manual focus and very rarely try to auto-focus on moving subjects in darkness. The manual controls are very nice to use. I think of it as a manual camera with auto features rather than the other way round. I’m used to using a screen to focus and frame so the absence of a built-in viewfinder is not something that bothers me. The only awkwardnesses that I’ve discovered so far are that it is not possible to shoot raw unaccompanied by a JPEG and that it is all too easy to operate some of the controls by accident. If Leica could install a controls lock via a firmware update that would be welcome. For me, it’s a good all rounder with sturdy Leica build and excellent image quality. I shall take it with me when a short zoom is more convenient than having to change lenses. paulsydaus Posted July 2, 2013 Share #9 Posted July 2, 2013 Congratulations on the new camera. I just thought I'd correct something, according to Leica the lens is f/3.5 to over 6 at the tele end, so it can't be shot wide open throughout its range as the OP said... euston Posted July 2, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted July 2, 2013 Congratulations on the new camera. I just thought I'd correct something, according to Leica the lens is f/3.5 to over 6 at the tele end, so it can't be shot wide open throughout its range as the OP said... Thanks, paulsydaus. Sorry if it was ambiguous. I did not mean to imply that the lens had a constant aperture throughout the zoom. I meant that it could be shot without IQ penalty at the widest possible aperture for each available focal length. As you say, that is f/6.4 at the tele end.
