D-Lux 5 vs D-Lux 6

Recommended Posts

The surface of the sensor of D-Lux 6 (1/1,7” - 12.7 MP) is a little smaller than that of D-Lux 5 (1/1,63” - 11.3 MP).

I have personally D-Lux 5 and I will expect the next number if however it is shown even more interesting…;)

I have the DLUX 5 and just purchased the Panasonic version - the LX7 for the faster lens, and slightly longer i-zoom. It's too early to tell, but I think I prefer the colors of the DLUX 5. I don't think it's a Leica vs. Panasonic thing, but rather a CCD sensor (DLUX 5) vs CMOS (LX7) one. I found the same thing with my Nikons and actually prefer the low ISO color rendition of the D80 to later models.

Does anyone think that it is worth the upgrade of selling the D-Lux 5 for the new D-lux 6? With the aperture ring it will save some time in setting-up a shot, and it has a larger sensor. But is it too close to take a loss on the D-Lux 5? Cheers

I own somes M6s, MP, a M8 and a bunch of M lenses as well as a R8 and couple of R lenses.

In addition to those gears I also use D-Lux 4, 5, and 6. At the time D-Lux 4 was brought out in 2008, Leica claimed that it enabled rendering an image of M-like Leica look. It is true!

D-Lux 5 has the same trait of D-Lux 4, however, with a broader zoom range (24-60mm vs. 24-90mm). In my opinion, D-Lux 5 can create better color than M8 no matter in out of camera JPEG files or DNG files under normal light condition, observed from the APPLE McBook Pro 15" with Retina display. In P mode all the images created are very pleasing, brilliant and well balanced.

As for D-lux 6, primary colors such as Green, Red, and Blue even Cyan are a little bit more salent, presenting some kind of garish. However, it features some interesting functions like

beter performance in high ISO setting,1920x1080 Full HD video recording capability vs. 1280x720 for D-Lux 5; HDR, panorama capture, F1.4 aperture, and a built-in ND8 filter.

Therefore, in case you focus on the IQ of the still picture at normal light condition, D-Lux 5 is better. However, if you like a broader scope of use experience, opt for D-Lux 6.

I myself prefer the color out of D-Lux 5.

All the best,

100% right, the colour out of the D-Lux 5 are the best.

1. = D-Lux 5 in mode "natürlich" and colour + / - 0

2. = D-Lux 6 in mode "standard" and colour + / - 0

my favorite altogether = D-Lux 6

my dream team: D-Lux 6 and the new XVario with the very best leica like colours !

It's very strange that "Natürlich" setting in D-Lux 5 does not functions as the "Natürlich" setting in D-Lux 6, I guess the firmwares come from different substractors.

In D-Lux 5,

English menu "Nature" means "Brighter red, green, and blue. Enhanced beauty of nature" if one pushes the "display" button while in the film "Nature" setting.

German menu "Natürlich" means "Rot, Grun and Blau heller. Natur wird betont"

In D-Lux 6,

English menu "Natural" means "Natural looking picture"

Germna menu "Natürlich" means " Natürlich wirkende Aufnamen"

After I make comparioson, it semms that the "Nature (Natürlich)" setting in D-Lux 5 functions more like the "Scny, Scenary" setting in the D-Lux 6. As "Scny" means "setting for distant landscape" (Landschaft: Einst. feur Entfernte landschaft)

Perhaps you can make a confirmation.

hallo thomas,

sorry computer-translator-result:

the different D-Lux 5 / D-Lux 6 is due to the sensor type. D-Lux 5 = CCD-sensor / D-Lux 6 = CMOS-sensor. a CCD processed color is not the same as a CMOS-sensor. I found out on the basis of visual results that the standard mode (D-Lux6) the mode of course (D-Lux5) comes closest.

sensor and software are not machine translation. the different translation results (english/german // german/english) play no role for the image result.

Hi, Michael,

Out of curiosity I made a comparison one moths ago by taking the same scene by several cameras on a tripod. They are D-Lux 5 and 6, M8 and Pentax K5-IIs with several lenses. The objective is seeing the rendering of JPEG image under various film modes or adjustments.

As for the brightness and saturation in an image, observed from the Dell 27" Ultrasharp 2711.

In D-Lux 5, "Nature" setting is better than "Standard".

In D-Lux 6, "SCNY" setting is better than "Standard"; "Standard" is better than "Natural".

You may duplicate the comparison if you are interested.

And from the experiment I think the outcome of color rendering is relavent to the combinations of (lens + sensor + firmware). The CCD vs. CMOS logic may certainly play a role, however, not so much influential.

Use both of D-lux 5 and D-Lux 6. Had to sell the D-lux 6 to my cousin due to her love of Leica. So I'm sticking with my D-lux 5 now.

I love the colour tone and black and white in D-lux 5, perhaps due to CCD sensor as it used also on M8? I agree with Thomas and KMHB, the D'lux 6 colour tone is rather pretty "standard". But  it has more features like HD Video, Aperture control on lens, and also ND Filter.
