A miller Posted June 28, 2013 Share #1  Posted June 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm sharing for comments and suggestions some flower shots from my recent trip to Dallas.  Gear = M3, 50mm dual range summicron (goggles used), polarizing filter, Ilford Delta 100 and a tripod. And, oh yead, a doorag and a water bottle  As you can see, given the 100 film and the polarizing filter, I had to shoot pretty wide open; generally b/n f2 and f4, so I probably didn't get the full potential of the sharpness of the lens. There was a bit of wind, too, which was annoying even though I kept my shutter b/n 1/500 and 1/1000.  Thanks for looking!  Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Hi A miller, Take a look here Some B&W film shots of flowers from the Dallas Arboretum. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pauledell Posted June 28, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted June 28, 2013 Adam, Â I like the first shot but I think you would be better served with color. If the background was much darker offering more contrast to the flower, the b&w would have been more effective. Â Paul
A miller Posted June 28, 2013 Author Share #3 Â Posted June 28, 2013 Thanks, Paul. I agree. Indeed, I shot 8 rolls of 4 different films, including Fuji slide film, fuji pro via 400 and kodak portra (sample of which I'll be posting in due course). I just had to have a go at the black and white. Personally, after all the color I find the B&W to be somewhat of a different stroke that has some pleasing elements. But this shoot taught me some critical lessons about how one needs to be very cognizant of not only the composition of the subject flower(s) but also the colors and tones of the background, even background that may be in the distance! mikeleng Posted June 29, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted June 29, 2013 Hi Adam For me there is not enough separation between the flower and the background, as Paul said maybe you might see that separation with more contrast or a colour version . Just my opinion . Mike
Karl G Posted June 29, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted June 29, 2013 Nice B&W series, Adam. It will be nice to see your Porta.
A miller Posted June 30, 2013 Author Share #6  Posted June 30, 2013 Are these versions with higher contrast an improvement, or is the background just too much competition?  I'm not the greatest PP pro.... pauledell Posted June 30, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted June 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Adam, Â The first two revisions are much better, but as you said, the background seems to clash too much with the subject. I would probably count that one as good experience on composition. Â Paul
