rafikiphoto Posted June 26, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted June 26, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a new Summicron 28mm. I just noticed that the front ring, the one with the white locating spot, to which the lens hood clips on to, has some play. It is only 1mm or so and appears not to be about to fall off but I find it disconcerting when the lens hood wobbles a bit. I'd be grateful f someone here with a newish 28mm Summicron could let me know if this is normal before me going further please.
Advertisement Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Hi rafikiphoto, Take a look here Summicron 28mm - is this right?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
maurometallo Posted June 26, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted June 26, 2013 The one on my camera right now is not mine, it belongs to a friend and colleague; however, there is not play whatsoever in the front ring... The hood sits properly and fits right... I'm checking this right now as I type... I suggest you to send the lens in...

wattsy Posted June 26, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted June 26, 2013 The 28mm Summicron is notorious for the front part of the lens becoming loose. Tightening the grub screws in that part of the lens usually does the job but don't be surprised if it eventually falls off altogether. IMO Leica should redesign the barrel of this lens to bring it into line with more recent lenses like the 24/3.8, 35 Summilux and 21/3.4.

rafikiphoto Posted June 26, 2013 Author Share #6 Â Posted June 26, 2013 Thanks all. I will give those tiny grub screws a tweak to see if they are loose. Â I found the right tool and blow me down all three grubby little screws were loose, one requiring a full turn. Now tight but I'm rather miffed that a lens so expensive and about one month old should have such an elmentary fault.

After the intern assembled your lens, he moved on to the Leica M camera production line, to fit a couple of strap lugs.

K Davis Posted June 27, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted June 27, 2013 As Wattsy said they're notorious for it. My 35mm Summilux Asph did the same so I sent both of 'em to my favourite repairer about 4 years ago, he fixed them and said it could well happen again but so far they're fine. farnz Posted June 27, 2013 Share #12 Â Posted June 27, 2013 Mine was the same but I fixed it by tightening the grub screws 3 year ago and no similar problem since. They should've used nails instead of grub screw to keep the front assembly in place. Â Pete.
250swb Posted June 28, 2013 Share #13 Â Posted June 28, 2013 I'm just wondering if it's worth the hassle of sending it in under warranty to see if they can do a better job this time. Â On the Summicron the front barrel tends to get twisted by the hood when the lens is changed, or when filters are fitted, and this causes the grub screws to loosen. So being careful not to partially hold the hood when lens changing can help. Â The only way to tighten a screw 'better' (tight is tight, not tight is loose, over tight is broken)is to use some thread lock. It doesn't want to be strong stuff, only something to prevent the screw unwinding, so I'd suggest a smear of clear nail varnish. Â Steve

furcafe Posted July 2, 2013 Share #18 Â Posted July 2, 2013 Ditto. Definitely true w/mine within weeks of owning it (brand new directly from Leica per the original M8 discount). I wasn't sure what was causing it until I read about the screw problem; tightened them up & alls well. Â FYI for the OP, if you haven't noticed, the stock hood is not particularly well-designed (plastic parts simply snapped together) or durable (area around the corner cut-out tends to develop cracks). A much better, albeit pricey, alternative is the 12466 hood (originally intended for the special titanium 35 'lux ASPH, but wide enough for the 28 'cron). viramati Posted July 3, 2013 Share #19 Â Posted July 3, 2013 mine did the same. You also need to check the 4 screws in the hood itself as these also came loose with one falling out. tried to ge a new screw from leica UK which proved impossible in the end with them saying it would need to be sent back to Solms to get the right screw. totally absurd if you think about it!!
