Leica X Vario Photos

First real chance to take a few shots with the XV. One or two small niggles but it does seem very good. Unusually for me these are all colour! Slight level adjustments in LR5 and minor trim crops.

A section of the Mary Rose undergoing the final stages of conservation. She was built in 1510, sank in the Solent in 1545, was raised from the sea bed in 1982 and housed in her new museum in 2013.

Another picture from the Mary Rose Museum in dim and problematic lighting.

Some great photos but for the money I can't help but think a 5D mk3 makes more all round sense.

As a 5D MkIII user, I'd have to respectfully disagree, if only on the basis of size, weight and ease of use. In terms of image quality, I'd say they are very close up to 1600 ISO. Beyond that, the 5D MkIII takes over, but how much shooting at that ISO does one do? The X Vario lens most definitely has the Canon optics beat.

I’m posting this as an example of a JPEG straight from the camera with no further processing except resizing for this site and conversion to sRGB. On my screen the colour of this JPEG is spot-on. I think it’s impressive because these shades of pink are difficult to get right working with the raw file. I’m reasonably proficient at developing raw files in ACR but it took me some time to approach the colour accuracy of this JPEG. In fact, the camera made a better job of it than I did. I’d be interested to hear what other users think of the camera-processed JPEGs.

It’s rather enjoyable to have an under-rated camera with hidden talents. Using it is a voyage of discovery.

Euston, regardless of which route you take, do you ever use a grey card, such as Pantone ColorChecker when in pursuit of accurate colour?
