M6 Classic upgrade to 0.85. How common?

General query as I'm new to Leica RF; have a bead on a Classic with a 0.85 VF that's well out of the serial # range for this limited run. Was it common or even cost-effective for someone to swap VF's? Trying to explain how this one got its "new eyes" but no one can tell me.

By "limited run" do you refer to the list of 3130 M6 Classics with 0.85x as detailed here? There's not really a "range" of numbers (though it depends on the definition of that word, I guess). I believe those cameras left the factory with the 0.85x VF.

Is the serial of the camera in that list (and what's the engraving like)? If the cameras is outside of the ranges detailed then it could have been upgraded. Leica quoted me around 800£ to switch the VF on my TTL from 0.72x to 0.85x. So whether upgrading is "cost-effective" depends on one's preferences (and wallet).

Yes, the brief production run of 0.85 M6 Classic. For £800, one is 'most' of the way to a a native .85 so why bother? In the US, a 0.85 TTL costs anywhere from $1200-1400, roughly £800-950.

Was offered a sample with a serial number that predates any in the range listed in that link.

Sorry for being unclear - I meant on the top plate of the body.

Inscribed "Leica Camera" and "Made in Germany" below it, on the back of the top plate.

Its serial number on the hot shoe is 170xxxx and nothing else..
