What Lens to buy as a start for the new M (240)

You already have a 21 Summilux, 35 & 90 Summicrons, and apparently you have a Noctilux; what focal length do you feel you're missing?

 

My preferred 4 lens kit is 21-28-50-90. It looks like you have the standard M primes covered.

 

What the M(240) adds is macro, zoom and long telephoto - see if you can find the following lenses -

 

• Vario-Elmarit - R 28-90 f/2.8-4.5 ASPH zoom
  
• Vario-APO-Elmarit - R 70-180 f/2.8 zoom
  
• Macro-Elmarit - R 60mm f/2.8
  
• APO-Summicron - R 180mm f/2 & a tripod!
  

I sold my 35mm and 90mm along with the M9-P.

When I bought the M9 I got a 35mm Cron and used that until I got the 21mm lux, and then 90% of the time after that I used the 21mm ......never used the 35mm again but I am hoping that the 35mm lux that I have ordered with the new M will be used more often seeing as it is a faster lens

Why did you sell your M9 so early?

I was struggling to use both DSLR and Rangefinder, I would get $%$#$# up switching between the to different settings so I decided to go the easy wrought and stick with the DSLR..............I also had this sneaky feeling that I may buy the new M so letting the M9 go wasn’t really a big deal

as the usual coverage goes from 28-135 I would guess not. I'm using it even with glasses on my M-E (and on a 0.58 M6ttl which makes it obviously more easily).

 

one of the best lenses I've seen so far. optically at least on par with the 50 1.4 asph and with a beautiful rendering. only downside is vignetting wide open which can of course be easily corrected (I didnt notice it on film with which I shot 2 rolls in a row wide-open only)

A web page with some great shots, a history with the M9P and a number of different M lenses on the one hand and and asking which lens to buy for the M on the other hand (as you would otherwise have nothing to screw onto it, but then you remember to have a Noctilux laying around). :confused:

correct got a 21mm lux as well

The ones I've found that have given superb results are 21/3.4, 50/0.95 and 75/2.... and if I was forced to dispose of all my other lenses it would be these 3 that I'd keep....

If you want just one lens, that will deliver great results and be flexible in terms of the look you can achieve, I would just buy the latest Noctilux. You really can't go wrong with it!

I have been asking the stores in the UK for one but none of them have any in stock, a few places in the US have them but I need to get it from the UK to get the tax break......will keep looking

easy... 50 apo-summicron , it seems you have the means, good luck with your choice,you have tried some of the other big $$$$$ lens. so i think this would be a natural choice and if

you dont like it you can sell to me a poor fellow scotsman, now in the usa

Thanks but I have ordered the Noctilux and looking forward to getting it along with the M

I think the question was STARTER LENS which means not to much money.

 

Summarit of you choice or a Zeiss if you want to fool around coding it.

 

Any used Leica 50 is decent from the Rigid 50 from 1958 to now. So are at all the coated Elmars, 28 or 3.5. Dual Range will not mount, but has the same optics as the Rigid.
