I worked at this gas station while in college in the early 80's. When the store was open we sold oil and a limited selection of convenience items.  We didn't have a cash register so rounded our prices to make totaling transactions easy.  It was during the transition from full service to pump your own.  My boss said he cannot stand idly by and watch ladies help themselves so we pumped their gas.  We were the most popular station in town.  I sold three thousand gallons one Friday afternoon and evening.  We were very competitive with other stations. I once caught a competitor reading the meters on our pumps.  Made many lifelong friends.  Not a technically demanding job but I learned that a smile and greeting customers by name is a powerful marketing tool.

The store is boarded up now but the pumps still operate with credit card only.  I shot this a month or so ago.  FP 4 and 50mm 2.0.

Ray - a wonderful and touching story to go with this picture - thank you. Photography can do that, can't it - help to resurrect some great memories.

This makes a really interesting graphic illustration of a place that takes you somewhere quite different than a "straight" shot would - a technique to bear in mind and to carry in the bag of tricks. Would make a nice print I'd say.

It does doesn't it, but in doing so the barn/shed and fence would be tilted.

Maybe, but at least it would stop me from thinking I'm about to slide out of the frame! Your Pentax picture using the 135mm lens is sublime, by the way Steve. Love the look of that film - could it perhaps even be a bit of a Color Implosion substitute...?

This is fantastic, Adam - and, if I may say, she even looks a bit like she could be related to the great Dooley Wilson: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0933330/

Ha ha, great observation, Phil.  :)

Looking back through some pictures I found this one. I think it is (for me at least) a really good illustration of what Henry calls that "softness" of film (it's probably actually better described in French - "douceur"), the way the people and the buildings in the background kind of trail off softly:

I agree, Phil.  And the detail in the highlights is pretty impressive as well.

Very lovely Joerg.  You captured the peacefulness perfectly.

I really love this one.  It gave me a little motion sickness.  And that's the power of a photograph!

Good one, Wayne.  The clarity and sharpness help me get grounded from the motion sickness of the photo above it :)

Southern France, Nice region, Provia 160S slightly aged, just like the photographer :)

You're either aging or you're not.  I prefer the former.  :)  Nice capture!
