The water table was raised in 2021, effectively stopping the degradation of the organic peat and thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions dramatically. The bluish leaves are reed that was absent and now takes over. At some point, the reed will be partially substituted by heather and perhaps accompanied by sphagnum moss when the water is acidic enough. The peat layer functions as a sponge and can take over 30 times its weight in water, thus helping to protect the nearby village from flooding.
