Beginning this past weekend NYC kicked-off its bike sharing system from a new corporation called NYC Bike Share which is clearly affiliated in some way with Citicorp. The system appears to have been copied from the system I saw in Paris the last two times I visited there. The NY system’s site tells of thousands of bikes available in hundreds of locations, and most of the reactions have been positive, though some people complain of the bike stations blocking access, which this photo suggests could be the case. They sell annual passes ($95 plus tax), 7-day passes ($25) and 24-hour passes ($9.95). One must return the bikes within 30 minutes for the lower two passes or pay an additional fee. For annual passes one can ride 45 minutes before incurring additional fees. When your time runs out return the bike, wait 2 minutes and take it out again. This shot is on 43rd Street, just west of 5th Avenue.

Stuart, I like the photo which really works well enough with the bikes lined up and your angle of composition . I like the color because I would not have appreciated the blue line in the B&W.

Hi Stuart - i love the color. Nice depth and vision. I think it is a clear winner over the bw. But i think the bw can be improved by lightening up the blue channel so that it pops relative to the bike stand. Thanks for sharing!

Very similar to our London 'Boris' bikes, which have proved a huge success, and make for a more enjoyable way of getting around town in summer especially, or if you miss the last tube! Costs are much less here, day pass is only £2.

Colour image for me.

I like this Stuart. You've framed it just right and the pov is great. Odd placement of the rack system, tho. It appears the entire lineup is at risk if a distracted driver veers off course. Also, anyone setting out on a bike has to first back it up into what looks like a narrow marked lane. Is that a dedicated bike lane?

Larry -

Thank you, and yes, that's a bike lane. When you sign-up for the service the site gives safety suggestions and rules of the road. The first person I saw using one immediately ran a red light, went down the block, then turned and went against traffic. I hope the bike survives his fatal crash, should there be one.

The colour gives the real sense of atmosphere, with the blue bikes and the yellow cabs, as well as the shops in the background. Interestingly Boris Bikes are blue as well and cyclists frequently run red lights in London, too
