earleygallery Posted June 20, 2013 Share #81 Â Posted June 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Glad it was resolved for you - eBay obviously know the bank or credit card details of the frauster so hopefully they can recall their funds or go after him, and for that sum I'm sure they will! Â Good to demonstrate to others that their buyer protection works too. Â This case is unusual in that the 'seller' used paypal and apparently sent an actual package, I will be more cautious with larger purchases in future! zombii Posted June 20, 2013 Author Share #82 Â Posted June 20, 2013 Yeah, this was a much more sophisticated scam then most and he clearly knew Ebay's policies as to when they would release the funds to him. The one thing I really fault Ebay for is that I think they should escrow funds from large ($1000+) sales for users with less than 5 or 10 sales until three days after the package is delivered. That would put a stop to probably 90+% of this kind of stuff.

They will hold funds until after the package is received on anything over $1000.00 unless you have over 25 sales.

sunil Posted June 21, 2013 Share #85 Â Posted June 21, 2013 Great to hear zombi, and glad that EBay stood by their buyers protection and took the loss on themselves. Thanks for informing the forum and potentially saving someone else from going through what you did. Â Â Â I agree zombi is a good guy but he didn't triumph against eBay/Paypal. He triumphed against a scammer who used the company to attempt to defraud people. EBay/Paypal stood behind their Buyers Protection guarantee and took the fraud and financial hit from the scammer, as they should have. Â Seems to me the scammer won, zombii came out unscathed and eBay lost. Thats the cost of doing business. At least their stock is riding high. zombii Posted June 21, 2013 Author Share #88  Posted June 21, 2013 I'd guess ebay/Paypal did not release funds  The first person I talked to at Ebay a couple of weeks ago told me that they had released the funds. When she told me that, I asked her how I was going to be reimbursed if that was the case. She said it would come out of their (Ebay's) account and then they would try to get it from him. Plus if they hadn't released the funds, they wouldn't have sent him a message threatening a collection agency.

Mr_Jones Posted June 21, 2013 Share #90 Â Posted June 21, 2013 Good news about the outcome. I can't understand how a seller with so little feedback can sell items of that value. I have a monthly limit on my account although I have excellent feedback as a seller. As far as I know the only way to get a higher limit is to register as a business seller but I thought measures would still be in place. If there is another way to increase the limit I'd like to find out.
Bill W Posted July 4, 2013 Share #91 Â Posted July 4, 2013 Is this the same scam Noctilux that was brought to the attention of forum members a few weeks ago? The photos look the same. I did a brief look for the other thread. If it is, please beware. I just remembered that the unfortunate member was Zombi but I might be wrong on the name and if so please forgive. I just remembered that the unfortunate member was Zombi but I might be wrong on the name and if so please forgive. Leica 50mm 0 95 Noctilux M ASPH | eBay  Interesting. The seller has a 100% positive feedback on e-bay. But its based on 5 transactions. All of which were executed on July 2nd with him as a buyer and all purchases were items priced around USD 1.30. An interesting and inexpensive way to build an e-bay feedback.
M9reno Posted July 4, 2013 Share #93 Â Posted July 4, 2013 The various sellers leave him identical feedback. Pretty transparently they are straw men. Who would fall for such a scam?
wlaidlaw Posted July 4, 2013 Share #94 Â Posted July 4, 2013 Well done Zombii. My experience was not as happy. I bought a Minox Titanium TLX camera. The camera which turned up was not the one in the photographs and had obviously been dropped from a considerable height into salt water. The outer casing was dented, the lens was cracked, the shutter was jammed and the whole interior corroded solid. The seller claimed I had substituted the camera after I had received it. eBay after a lot of hoo haa did not reverse the sale or get me a refund. This was paid by cheque not Paypal. I therefore had an address for the seller. Â I reported him to the Police and took him to the small claims court. He failed to turn up for the hearing and I was awarded the full amount plus my expenses and court costs. I then had to pay a bailiff to collect as he still did not pay. The bailiff failed to collect any of the outstanding court award or goods in lieu, so I was out even more money. This was the second time I had won in the Small Claims Court but failed to get any money back. I have come to the conclusion it only works against honest folks and for the crooks. Bill W Posted July 4, 2013 Share #96 Â Posted July 4, 2013 I just looked at the beginning of this thread and it is the same lens listed with serial number 4085469. pico Posted July 4, 2013 Share #97 Â Posted July 4, 2013 I think item will be taken down soon. eBay is getting better at finding scams, including image-matching searches on high-dollar items with low-feedback.

Maybe a button on the sale page but only available after you sign in. Then eBay could also trace malicious reports on genuine sales. Â Wilson
pico Posted July 4, 2013 Share #99 Â Posted July 4, 2013 I reported him to the Police and took him to the small claims court. [...] Â Good for you regardless of the outcome because if the police are any good they will file the incident in an on-line database. We had a kidnapping here, and the FBI searched for all local reports of crimes and mere complaints and matched a man who lived near the kidnapped little girl. They spread the word and the perp was nailed a thousand miles away. He got life in jail. Â eBay should make it a lot easier to report scam sales. Maybe a button on the sale page but only available after you sign in. Then eBay could also trace malicious reports on genuine sales. Â Search the listing for the word 'report'. They make it quite easy. (at least in USA eBay).
