As far as I am aware there is no import duty on camera gear. :)

So you'll just get hit for the vat.

The lens has not been released yet, expected deliveries are end-June.

You can also order from this supplier in France and you'll pay no taxes within Europe. I've bought several lenses through him, very reliable and efficient:

Nokton Asph. 50 f1.4 en monture M

Cheers that work out less than £600 will have to see what UK dearlers want

This is true for digital cameras but I believe that camera lenses attract duty of around 6%. Whether you actually get charged is of course a different matter.

I guess your customs staff are more officious than ours - they use a more liberal interpretation.

However the seller must declare the correct Taric code.

Does anyone have links to samples of the old 50 1.5? I'm curious to know why it commands such a high price.

There's a couple of versions of the 50mm 1.5 LTM. The more recent one is one of the great bargains of the Leica world. That's the CV 50mm f1.5 Nokton ASPH (LTM). Those are available for under $500.00. I paid $400.00 for a mint one with an M adaptor. There's also a much older and quite rare 50mm f1.5 Nokton that commands collectable prices.

The original Nokton 1.5/50 (7 lenses in 5 groups) was/is a legendary lens for the Voigtländer Prominent rangefinder camera introduced in 1951. It was said to be ahead of the high speed lens competition at the time (Leitz Summarit, Zeiss Sonnar). While the Nokton in Voigtländer Prominent mount is not an uncommon lens nowadays (but still not cheap), the same lens in Leica screwmount is indeed a very rare lens and sought after by collectors, which explains the high prices it commands. If you want to see sample pictures of that lens, just do a search on flickr for "Prominent Nokton". I assume there is little or no optical difference between the Prominent and the Leica mount version of the lens. BTW, there is an Ebay seller who offers an adapter to convert the Prominent mount lenses to M39, but I have no idea if that adapter works well or not.

The screwmount Nokton 1.5/50 that was introduced by Cosina Voigtländer in 1999 (and has since been discontinued) has nothing to do with the original Nokton. The looks and the optical designs are quite different, using 6 lenses in 5 groups including one aspherical element. It is generally well regarded, a good copy of this lens is said to be about as good as the spherical Lux (Version II) or maybe even better. Compared to the spherical Lux it is quite chunky though and some people (including me) complain about its ergonomics.

The newly introduced CV Nokton in M mount mimics the cosmetics of the original Voigtländer Nokton from the 1950s, while retaining the optical design of the screwmount CV Nokton. CV points out however, that the coatings have been improved for the new version.

I've bought but whilst I'm in NZ and there is a distributor I always get my VC gear from Cameraquest because it's quicker. It will be ages before the lens arrives on these shores......apart from mine :D
