essphoto Posted May 23, 2013 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Been abroad shooting lately and just yesterday I was out when my Leica M9P began to freeze up as others have described. Eventually the camera wouldn't function with the card inside. I just returned to home base to see if the card still contained the images I'd shot that day, but I can't even get the card to load on the computer. My Mac doesn't even recognize it! Does anyone have any useful suggestions on how to recover this data? For what it's worth, I was shooting to a SanDisk Ultra 8 GB 30 MB/s. Thanks. Advertisement Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Hi essphoto, Take a look here M9P destroyed my SD card data. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ecar Posted May 23, 2013 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2013 SanDisk have a small recovery software. You may want to check that out - I believe an activation code comes with each purchased card, but you should be able to get a free version. Hope it helps - never needed it, so can't tell you if it's effective.

zanydave Posted May 23, 2013 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2013 I had the same problem with those very same cards in my M9-P Forget trying to recover the data. I sent mine back to Sandisk but the cards were totally dead. They replaced them which was something I suppose. Never used Sandisk in my Leica again. vcs700s Posted May 23, 2013 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2013 I recently had the exact opposite experience. Shooting with the X2 and a Lexar 400x card it kept locking up. Switched to a Sandisk 16gb Ultra. No lock ups or problems since.

You could ask Leica in Solms to recover your data - if it's worth the expense to you. I would use a different card from another vendor. You also may want to search this forum for Panasonic Gold. That should show you how to avoid these kinds of problems in the future. I always enjoy watching this clip. Pretty funny and actually useful. Good luck. mhanke Posted May 24, 2013 Share #7 Posted May 24, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I assume this card had worked in your computer before? The reason I ask is that none of my Leica/Panasonic SD cards is recognized by my three Win XP-computers, once they had been formatted in the camera (M-9P, D-Lux 3, D-Lux 5, V-Lux 20). I can access the data only via USB-cable connected to the camera directly, or - weirdly - via an external card reader, also connected by USB cable. jaapv Posted May 24, 2013 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2013 That points to some setting in your Windows or security software, maybe they get blocked by a firewall or anti-virus software -or maybe even more basic, the cardreader in your computer is not SDHC compatible. zlatkob Posted May 24, 2013 Share #9 Posted May 24, 2013 Does anyone have any useful suggestions on how to recover this data? For what it's worth, I was shooting to a SanDisk Ultra 8 GB 30 MB/s. Thanks. Sandisk RescuePRO software should recover the photos: SanDisk RescuePRO® and RescuePRO® Deluxe Recovery Software | LC Technology International, Inc. Or perhaps Lexar Image Rescue: Lexar® Image Rescue® 4 Software | Lexar Note that many cards on the market are fake. Was it purchased from a reliable vendor? If not, it's possible that it is not a genuine Sandisk. Good luck!
BWA Posted May 24, 2013 Share #10 Posted May 24, 2013 I have experienced the very same problems with my M9 - always using San Disk cards and even after the latest firmware update. The big problem is that the card is so damaged that the computer will not mount it or read it so recovery software will not work! I reasoned that if the card was formatted again then it might mount on the computer and recovery software should find the files since no other photos will have been taken to overwrite them in the interim. I couldn't format it in the M9 but a friend did it for me in his Canon. After it was formatted the computer could read the card and the files were recovered using Photorescue. Obviously there is a major risk doing this that the files may not be recoverable so I would not try it for irreplaceable photos. I threw away all my SanDisk cards and changed to Lexar Pro 16gb cards and have not had a problem since.
profus Posted May 27, 2013 Share #11 Posted May 27, 2013 Had the same issue with my M9P and Sandisk cards - twice! First time for 6 months ago, last time 2 weeks ago! Both times I was able to recover the images using CardRecovery (Pro) software, but the cards ( one 16Gb Extreme Pro and another 8 Gb Ultra ) were totally unusable since. Could not "see" them either in my Mac or Win. Tried to put them in my Nikon D800 - it stopped working unless I removed them again...! I switched to Kingston now and hope for the best... ahl Posted May 31, 2013 Share #12 Posted May 31, 2013 Hi there, As long as you do not try to write to the card since the crash I am convinced you may be able to get most of your files back. The corruption was most likely caused by a camera crash but occasional card failures are possible. I have used some 20 different Sandisk cards in my M8 then M9: all worked perfectly except 1 which failed but I was able to retrieve most of the photos with their own recovery software. I returned the card to Sandisk with a copy of the receipt and it was replaced by return. They seem to be of above average quality and have survived accidental washing machine excursions. If the camera crashed and stuck then the formatting may get corrupted when you remove the battery but the individual files should be there except the ones that were being processed at the time. This happened to me when shooting continuously when the buffer got overwhelmed. Please note there are many fake Sandisk cards around and it is well worth buying from a reputable source; also the formatting in cameras is different to the one in W-XP so it is always best to format in camera. Each make of camera formats differently and could get confused if the cards are used without re-formatting in between as the file details and numbers would not match. I hope your photos are not gone for good. Alan
