Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario

Story 3 clearly says LC1 was made by Pansonic, then Story 5 Leica claims they made it aka Digilux3. Oh dear. Same with the lens.

Anyhow this is known for years.

Given the history XVario lens may well be made by Panasonic (just as Digilux2 , Digilux 3 lens) with the glass itself from Leicas special forumla.

It's not a matter of "Oh dear" ... The Olympus E-330, Panasonic LC-1 and Leica Digilux 3 cameras were all based on the same chassis - but were different cameras both physically and electronically ... each partner's specifications differed. And the Leica D lenses were a joint project between Leica and Panasonic. ... as documented in the link. If you wish to be in denial of these facts so be it. Your similarly speculative assumptions about the X Vario's lens without you having any documentary proof are noted.

But just imagine the thing blown up to APS-C compatible size and screwed on to an X2 type body...

As it is it even looks overlarge on a brick like the Digilux 3;)

This is the Leica D Vario Elmar 14-150mm f3.5-5.6 on my Olympus E-5

It appears to be a large lens but in use it's quite manageable at all focal lengths.

I was seriously considering purchasing Xvario, as i feel its simple elgance would be just right and the Digiuux2 of this decade.

However, given the appearance of Digilux3, Leica may well bring out an interchangeable X with some lovely fast AF lenses (which will again be made by Pansonic with Leica's special glass formula).

The Digilux 3 was a massive failure. Leica have said they're not interested in 4/3 which is favoured by Panasonic. I think you'll be waiting a very long time for 'your' camera.

And it was justly a massive failure. I was horrified when I saw that lump at Photokina in 2006, all the more so as I had my beloved Digilux2 with me at the time and could compare. Having said that, it is not a bad camera with an excellent kit lens. I still use it daily for medical photography with the Olympus extender and ringflash with very satisfactory results. The sensor is not for all subjects though, it tends to render foliage looking like an aquarel painting.

We shall see nothing. There will never be a Leica 4/3rds again.

This was 2006 dear. Nowadays lens design advancerments allow for much smaller whilst keeping speed at f2.8. Yet even in 2006 there was a constant apsc f2.8 18-50mm with 67mm filter with max length 85mm (Xvario max length 70mm).

Basically Leica just dont have the resources to make Autofocus lenses especially small fast, it would require a whole new plant.

Nowadays the laws of optics are the same as they have always been. LuLa has been quoted: You can have only two out of three parameters on a zoom lens:

1. High quality

2. High speed

3. Small size

Take your pick....

Leica builds the best small fast lenses in their class in the world, be it manual M-series, C-series, or autofocus S series. Your last sentence is nothing short of ridiculous.

Is what i wrote so difficult to comprehend.[/quote

It is very comprehensible. It just happens to make no sense at all.

Leica X Vario DNG files will open in Lightroom 4 ... might be of interest to anyone wishing to try the camera and who does not have LR5 .

A friend borrowed my X Vario this morning and downloaded the DNG files to his LR4. And BTW ... he is very impressed with quality of the pics especially when viewed at 'actual pixels' at ISO 3200. I think he's considering acquiring an X Vario himself now - he's a Leica Forum member.

XApsc interchangeable not 4/3.

Market wasnt ready for a Digilux3.

We shall see.

I disagree, I think the market had already moved on when the Digilux 3 came out. It had a smaller sensor than the typical DSLR and an EVF, yet it was larger than most DSLRS with optical finders of course! It was a pointless design.

Micro 4/3 came shortly after and made much more sense, but Leica will never go down that route.

I agree that a new Leica camera like an X2/Vario but with interchangeable lenses will come along at some point, but it won't be a PanaLeica and it won't happen any time soon.

If you're waiting for a crop sensor EVIL camera that takes different lenses then look to one of the other brands for your solution.

Your enthusiasm is commendable; your beliefs and opinions are questionable and against the grain of known, proven and accepted facts.

There are forum members who have a more comprehensive understanding of the laws of optics than you appear to possess.

Digilux 3 has an optical view finder.
